the best year is....not a 01-04 (unless its a 04.5). Dont get me wrong some other year trucks have common problems like the LLY overheating but there is a solution for it. All the after market injectors use the same bodies but they have different tips so...Cure the problem...dont know.

Pretty much any generation has it issues. LB7 were the Injectors because the way they were made. Replaced with the new style and less trouble. But all have injector issues. Look at it this way it is usually 1 or 2 injectors. Dealers replaced all injectors. So one can look at doing them as they go bad if out of injector warranty of 7 years 100,000 miles. LBZ thrid generation seems to most perfered since LMM 4th generation had DPF Diesel Particulate Filters on the Exhaust system to meet the new emmissions. Plus changing a tune on the ECM will pretty much void your warranty. Even if you go in for service with any truck with a programmer display on the dash they can say warranty void these days. So your best thing these days is not to change anything. But of course thats no fun.

Things these trucks should have are a lift pump and 2 micron fuel filter. Cleaner the fuel less injector issues I would say. Your fuel sprayed in the cylinder at WOT wide open throttle is near 26,000psi. Thats serious blasting and if water in the fuel then thats like sand blasting since water does not like to compress very well.

Tuning can really bring these trucks to life but to much power will cause problems. Any power over stock is gonna wear parts faster. So run a 150HP tune on stock transmission will last a little bit but once you slip it it is damaged and will only get worst over time. The biggest issue is again WOT in the upper gears 4th on up plus the up and down shifts.

for all out strongness w/ out all the emission crap egr ect. the 01-04 lb7 has the toughest bottom end of all of them . ive been torturing mine for 135,000miles. injectors done once and i built the allison stage 5. still on stock head gaskets, turbo, heads, and all other engine components as well. the other generations i will admit the varible turbo is where its at, its great. i know guys w/ lb7's that run 600-almost 800hp on the stock bottom end. running 11's at the track.

i run high12's w/ ppe 270hp tune and water meth and so far so good w/ everything.

THE LB7'S ARE VERY STRONG W/ LESS CRAP TO DEAL W/ TO MAKE THEM POWERFUL, YOU HAVE TO SPEND MORE MONEY AND LABOR TO MAKE THE HIGHER GENERATIONS, POWERFUL. BUT THE VARIBLE TURBO IS AWSOME!

IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT YOUR LOOKING FOR OUT OF THE TRUCK
