: 2005 Fuel Milage Questions......
Max Owner 05-17-2005, 02:20 PM Hey all. I don't spend any time in this forum because I have an 02.... Plus I am on dial up, so it is BLOODY slow.
Neighbor of mine in the campground has an 05 Sierra, D/A. He is most unhappy with his fuel milage. He has owned about 4 of these trucks.
But his 05 is getting very poor milage, and he is most upset (it seems)
I am wondering if there is any info I can take back to him? Didn't get the actual milage on the truck. He does tow. Claims he isn't driving very fast (says driving habbits are no different than other thrucks) However he said he was pushing 130 KLMs an hour (85 MPH) when he hit a deer, while towing his trailer..... So I wonder about his speed thing.
Told him about the forum.......
am.mscl 05-17-2005, 03:53 PM Still under 2000 miles on my 05 2500 HD CC.
Regular daily driving around 15mpg city speeds of 30-50mph and hw 70-80mph
Highway driving around 17.5 mpg 80 mph
Towing a 2800lb trailer and a 3100 car inside the trailer with about 200 of tools this weekend I got 10 mpg. I expect this to go up when the motor gets broken in. I was going 70-85 on the highway and I also got stuck in traffic jam for about 1/2 hour for 1/2 mile.
sierradmax 05-17-2005, 07:03 PM 17.7 mpg average 70% highway with 2300 miles
BigShrimpah 05-17-2005, 07:33 PM my last two fillups all city with some foot to the floor driving averaged 13.5mpg. Towing a 34ft cigarette boat and some playing with the 100hp tune got me 11mpg. I usually average about 18.5 highway.
redeagle313 05-17-2005, 09:57 PM '05 with almost 4000 miles, got 18.7 last tank, 85% highway @65mph, the rest is in and around town. Pure highway and I am in the high 19's. If some one is driving 85mph, their mileage will probably suck  .
I got 14.8 mpg towing my Airstream (7,000 pounds) the first time, 140 miles @60mph with a slight crosswind. The next trip, the first 100 miles I had a 15 to 20 mph headwind, and I was at 12.8 mpg @60mph. The return trip with a quartering headwind of about 10mph, I got 13.8 mpg.
Reineke 05-18-2005, 05:45 AM Speed definately kills, fuel milage that is...
skoryaro2 05-18-2005, 09:15 AM Ditto on the speed thing! Almost 14K miles on my '05. 15 - 17 MPG running around town. 19 MPG on the HWY at 72MPH. If I cruise 75-80 HWY mileage crashes to about 16 MPG. Pulling 6K pound trailer recently HWY at 70 MPH got 12.5.
mmsss 05-18-2005, 10:24 AM '05 Dually-less that 500 miles on the clock-DIC indicates 13.9 to 14.2 mpg unloaded driving 55-65. Hope it gets better!! I won't be able to afford the fuel pulling the trailer.
Max Owner 05-18-2005, 01:22 PM The neighbor said he was about 11 MPGs empty. Claims his driving habbits haven't changed from his last four trucks.
I rember hearing a long time back that the LLY engine wasn't getting that good of milage.
Thanx guys.
duramaxgoose 05-18-2005, 01:59 PM mpg's going down, and diesel fuel prices going up, and I wonder why the dealer came off 10,000. But still better mpg's than a gasser
DMax in Alaska 05-18-2005, 04:52 PM 700+ miles Round-trip from Palmer, AK to Fairbanks, AK at 65 MPH I averaged 21.5 mpg according to the DIC. With the topper added, it has risen a little to just under 23mpg. About 4K miles on the odometer.
Towing the trailer...axe those numbers in half. I have a Jayco 28 ft TT that weighs in at about 7500 lbs. I see anywhere from 9-11 mpg towing in the hills at 65mph.
But boy is it nice having that torque to move that beast.:ro) Nothing like being able to accelerate up a steep grade.
gilltred 05-19-2005, 03:19 AM mmsss, Im with you,my 05 dually c/c 4x4 is getting the same as yours.I know there is extra weight but how are some of these guys getting 17 to 19mpg?To make matters worse the dic is not accurate,it is really about one mpg less then what it says you are getting.I did mine with a calculator and came up with 12.7mpg.I have about 2500 miles on it,I hope it gets better but it still beats the 8mpg I was getting in my 02 2500hd with the 8.1 liter gasser.
05 D/A 2500 05-19-2005, 10:26 PM Ditto on the speed thing!
I am about the same at over 14K. :muahaha:
VT_mountain_man 05-19-2005, 10:41 PM http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif Just got back home today, got 20.5 mpg running 65 to 70 up and down
I91 in VT with about 10,000 miles on my truck. was runnung around 18-19mpg
when it was new
btfarm 05-20-2005, 08:18 AM 1st 2500 mi, 13 to 14 mpg. Next 5000 mi, crept right up to around 16 mpg. Now at 8500 on the OD starting to tickle 17 mpg. 85% of my driving is a 50-50 mix of 60-65 mph and 70-75 mph. All #s hand calculated at every fill up. No it's not nearly as good as I had hoped, but since I traded in an '03 8.1/A that got 11 mpg on a GOOD day, I ain't complaining... I'm also thinking it'll get better after a few more thousand mi based on what others have indicated on this forum.
BigShrimpah 05-20-2005, 09:42 PM I just got back from an 800 mile round trip. I was towing an 8k lb 26ft Regulator offshore boat with a crappy swaying trailer. It only kicked out of overdrive twice when going up steep river crossing bridges. I got 9mpg on the way there. On the way back unloaded and cruise set between 70-72mph I got 21MPG!!! Hand calculated. Can't wait to see if a 6 speed allison conversion will be available then the MPGs will rise even more. I think this ole DMAX of mine is finally start to get a lil broken in. I got about 8500 miles on it now. Also, I checked all fluids before I left and the blocked EGR is keeping the oil MUCH cleaner.
TLTBOWEN 05-20-2005, 10:09 PM I jsut got back from a 1300 mile vacation pulling the 5er 10,000 approx. Going I got 11-12 hand calculated coming back pushing through strong head winds I got about 10. I was running at 70-73 as much as I could. I havent run a full tank through the truck with out pulling something but the few time I have filled up empty and put a 100 or so miles the DIC read in the 22-23 MPG area. My truck turned 7100 today on the way home.
Bob Anderson 06-01-2005, 08:44 PM I just got back from a 2300 mile round trip weight about 18000 with trailer average about 12 MPG. I started trip with 100 miles on it now has 2600.
BobA:ro)
otter04 06-07-2005, 06:03 PM mpg highly speed dependent. Cruising on the highway:
23-24 mpg at 55 mph
a little over 20 mpg at 65 mph
a little over 19 mpg at 70 mph
Got 19.9 mpg average on michigan to florida to michigan trip....driving 65-70 mph but not over 70 mph. Warm up period hurts economy as does city driving...I average around 19 overall, but I don't stand on it and I don't do a lot of stop and go.
a little over 12 mpg at 65-70 mph with 9000lb 32 foot enclosed tag along car hauler.
Truck is 2005 crew cab 4x4 with mid-rise topper. Diesel and allison tranny.
I would be skeptical if you get better than this, and worried if you get much worse.
