Just thinking out loud...got the '01 2500HD in my signature, ccsb, 8.1L/Ally...the simplicity of the 8.1L is a breath of fresh air compared to the drama of my LB7, but honestly, the mileage SUCKS. How ludicrous is the idea of a Cummins/Ally combo in my 2500HD? And just how salty would this be parts-wise? Any shot of the dash/guages/etc working when it's all said and done?

You have to change to a stand-alone controller for the Allison.

Gauges I have no idea there. But probably work out if worst case crack it open and section each off. But do believe the cluster is pretty seperated at the plug. Oh it can be done and sure it has. Might try google searching. for 8.1 to cummins swap or something like that.

You can olny drive one truck at a time so I say make that 8.1 breathe some fire and use it as a toy :D

An 8.1L-->Dmax swap seems straightforward enough, except everyone recommends staying within the same generation, which means LB7...but I'm kinda down on the whole *LB7 experience* after the 2nd round of injectors in my dually...if an LLY or newer swap was possible would be great, but everyone says it's next to impossible on the '01-'02 trucks. Just my luck...!

 if you stuff a Cummins in that truck. Great torque and much better fuel milage. The Cummins is known to have the best fuel milage of the diesels.

I ran across a thread a couple nights ago where a guy put a Cummins (I think it was even a 24v? can't remember...) in a 2000 or 2001 light duty 2500...so, it'll fit. Try google to find it, and I'll see if I can dig it up...

I've been wanting to do this too. Anything is possible. It was actually done quite a while ago. There was an 01 HD for sale in a local trader here about 5 years ago. It was an SFA lifted white reg cab. I'm an idiot............5 years ago they only wanted $12k for it!!!!!!!
