So, I've got a dually for the stability while carrying my 5,000 truck camper. I'm in the process of selling it. Anyone ever drove a fair amout without the inner tires? How's the MPG? Might look a tad funny, but not too bad if you arn't looking. I've run the 1/4 with and without the inners and they make a good difference in the runs, .3 I think. Just wondering how it works with just the outters for daily drivinig? Would a large single have less rolling resistance than 4 smaller ones? Less sidewalls, but still same contact area.

Used to have a young fella work for me that ran just the inside wheels & tires on a dually. Looks strange but his milege & performance went up quite a bit. I would guess one single larger tire would have less rolling resistance. You would not have six tires working against each other as you do with duals. i.e. no two tires are the same, tread works differently, side wall flex is different heat disipation, etc, etc,

Removing the inner tire is a horrible thing to do if you will be towing. It puts all the load so far out on the hubs it will wear out bearings and bend wheels. I have done both. If you are after a minimal gain in MPG maybe .5-1 mpg better I would take off your outers. Performance will not be all that noticable either.
If you are not towing and want that little bit of MPG then go for takin off the inners.

if you are going to single out a dually, buy a cheap set of srw rims, your bearings will thank you.

My 99 3500 Do_g_ is/ was a duelly and I ran the Michelin M/S they are a good tire and don't add to much for rolling resistance. The A/T tires and such add too much rolling resistance. I think that this would be a far better option?

I have a long trip towing a 5,000 lb boat with about 300lb tongue weight. The truck will be empty except the 300 lbs. I know my truck is faster with single rear on the race track, so just figuring better mpg also.
I'd rather pay the extra $5 in fuel than look like Fred Sanford going down the road..... ;)

When I blew my outer seals and cooked my outer bearings I had no mare than 6000 pound trailer goin down an old dirt road not even fast. It was just to much strin on the axle with the load that far out there. This was with a full floater dana 70

Humm, ok, guess it might not be worth the extra few bucks. Then the tires are not worn evenly either. Guess I'll keep it looking normal. Thanks all.
