times are tough here in the Detroit area i need some xtra income this winter and would like to stick a plow on my truck. problem is i only have 2wd. i just got brand new Toyo open country's, and thought if i put a few hundred pounds in the bed it may just work. Any one plowed with 2wd before? my brother inlaw says they use a older 2wd dump but the dump bed has to weigh three times as much as my bed.
So let me know if im asking for trouble or i should invest in a plow.

If you have to do any piling of the snow you are out of the game. You just don't get enough bite with the 2WD

I have been plowing with my one ton 2wd dually dump for three years now. I put about 1,000 to 1,500 lbs in it. I don't do a lot of plowing, mainly residential, but haven't been stuck yet, knock on wood. The only problems I run into is hills, and heavy wet snow where the extra two front wheels would help. I have no problem getting traction in normal snow, even in 12-18 inches, its the icy, heavy and wet crap that I have trouble in, but I've never plowed in a 4x4 to compare. I would say that if you can weigh down the bed good, have some good snow tires, (that makes all the difference) you should be alright. It all depends on what you decide to plow. If you can stay away from hills, and if you get some commercial or residential stuff they need it plowed a couple of inches at a time, and not plowing out remote hilly driveways after two feet, then you should be good.

my dad plowed with a 2wd dually for many years. just take off 2 rear tires. run only the inside rears and u'll have twice the traction cuz same weight over half the area

Not true. My 03 is a 2wd and we use it to plow. I run an MVP on it. Enough weight in the bed and there's no need for 4wd if you have a good driver. I don't think mine has ever even spun the tires, and it's a stacking machine.
Oh yeah, and this is pre and post lift and tires ;)

I run a 8'2" Boss V. and have a 1000lbs block of conrete I put in the bed right against the tailgate and strap it down. Unless I get into some deep stuff or trying to pile a bunch of snow I can keep it in 2wd. Much easier to turn without being in 4wd. You being a dually have having less ground PSI since you have more contact area it might be a lil iffy. What kind of plow do you plan on running? I would put more than 1k lbs in the bed regardless to ensure you have traction. just my .02
I haave a 2wd plow truck that plows every storm since I bought it in 2002. You just need the weight but most importantly you dont plow where you should not be in 2wd. Great for commercial lots. Much less maintenance then the 4x4s for me.
