Is it better to run the 180's or stick with 195's

I run one of each in my dual stat.

why/What does running one of each do.

I belive that's the way the factory had it. I installed my dual stat and just used what the GM did. I think the reason is because at no load the 180 will open all the time giving you more than enough flow. When you tow a trailer and need that extra cooling, the second one opens at 195 and then you have max flow with both open and this keep the temp closer to optimal temp for towing. This is what I've been told anyways from a GM mech.

My truck never goes above 200 with this set up. Usally stays at 180 without a trailer.

Thank's Dave, never knew that.My 96' has to be a late build because it has the dual stat's and they are both 195's,so i installed new one's last fall but with summer coming i was wondering. The 180/195 set-up sure makes sense.Do you see a problem with using an ordinary 180 stat and putting the rubber ring on it?That is what i should have done last fall because the only place i could find the 195's for the 6.5 were at the stealer for 30 buck's each:eek: The only difference i can see is that the gm stat is completly covered with rubber.

I use an aftermarket fail safe stat with the gasket. Only $10 from the part store. Works fine for me.

I went through several aftermarket stats (4 sets) in a very short period (about 2 monthes) on the 96 suburban. I know it was piss-poor luck & a better never happen again thing. The stats were obviously not opening sufficiently. I finally bought 2 OEM stats & they are still in. I don't recall ever buying an OEM stat before then.

I ordered the Robertshaw stats for my truck from Kennedy Diesel, a supporting vendeor here at the place, for like 10.00 each I believe. You will need to find the o rings locally too.

I've been running 2 195 degree Robertshaws from Kennedy since upgrading my cooling working great so far.

I ordered the 180's. I check with some non-diesel people when it came to replacing the ones on my LT1 and they spoke very highly of the robertshaws as full flowing and very dependable. I use to sell parts and we often had other stats come back for failure to open, hard to figure those out, so I really listened to what others were running in other engines as well as their diesels.
Guess I said that to say this, I asked around with performance guys and they said robertshaws were some of the best out there.
