Had it changed once and it lasted about 13k miles before it began to clunk again. Tried the zip tie with some sucess. How much are these bushing to buy as I might get a couple to have on hand as needed. Thanks!

Not sure what the story is now, but I just replaced the ISS and the bearing and it seems fine except now I have a clunking noise coming from the upper end of the shaft near the wheel, when I go over rough road or bumps. I guess there is a bearing on this end that needs to be replaced now!!

I have the white bushing on my truck so I couldnt do the ip tie fix. There was no hole in the bushing. I was in a hurry to make it alittle better becuase I have a few hundred miles to drive this weekend. So last night instead of taking everything apart and drilling a hole in the bushing for the zip tie, I decided to push the white bushing back in and tight up against the lower steering column. I put to dabs of super glue, one on each side, where the white bushing butts up to the lower column. Went for a test drive last night and to work this morning and all seems fine. I ordered a new bushing from the link above, but this seems to be a good fix if your annoyed and in a pinch. Thought I would share, thanks

I might add that the Dorman shaft found at Rockauto is cheaper than the OEM version and built better.

I have about 18k on mine, installed with a new green bushing and it has held up better than the new OEM one.

The clunking will probably always come back because of the cheap plastic housing for the bearings.

some one has posted a replacement bearing to the end of the stearing collum. I think this will the next addition to mine. I just got the shaft replaced and took it back the next day and got the green bushing replaced. It started clunking the second day driving it. I know it is the green bushing so that will be where I concentrate next. I have a machine shop at my disgression. I will see what I can come up with.

Just changed mine out, actually found that the green bushing had worked out some and the bearing inside was out.

The bushing also has a bearing inside. The bushing had worked down the shaft causing the bearing to fall down.

Does anyone have a link or some instructions on replacing the ISS and notorious green bushing? Thanks in advance

Not a whole lot to it. Go under the truck and under the dash at the fire wall and unbolt each end. Compress the end in the cab and pull it out. It was a bear trying to pull that bushing out but it will come out. Then replace the bushing and the ISS the opposite way you took it out and your good to go. Sorry for the vague instructions but look in the DIY section for better info.

I will get to work on it soon. Oh yeah, is the green bushing the booger to get out at the fire wall?

Make sure you keep the steering wheel from turning when disconnected from the steering shaft (use a seat belt tied through or a stop pin tool) or you can break the clock spring for the air bag assembly.

I'm in the same boat as the last guy. I just got my shaft today, and can't wait to replace it! Looking under the dash, I'm a little confused though! I assume the green bushing has to be removed first right? You said "go under the truck right? So do I have to push?pull the shaft coming through the firewall down a little to slide the other one down? Thanks for the help!!

Once you restrain the steering wheel, remove the bolt and flange nut from the ISS to the lower steering shaft heading the the gearbox (under the hood). Next, under the dash, remove the bolt and flange nut from the ISS to the column shaft. Next push the ISS towards the engine compartment to compress it, once compressed, you can disengage it from the steering colum shaft and pivot out of the way. The green bearing can now be removed from the lower part of the steering column tube.
