I am changing the fuel filter for the first time and have a question. Does anyone lub the o-ring on the new filter and if you do, with what? The manual does not mention lubbing the o-ring but I did watch a dealer tech. change my filter the first time I had it done and he used a bluish lub that he said was supplied by GM.
I have read the thread in this forum and the author said that he did not use any lub. One another question, do you tighten the new fiter hand tight or turn it 1/4 of a turn further with a strap wrench?
Thanks.

I always use silicone grease or similar on any filter ring. Otherwise, you will not get a good seal and tight threads...
All filters are hand tightened so I don't have to use a wrench to get them off...
That is my $0.02, YMMV.

I always lube a filter seal with whatever is going to be in the filter - in this case, fuel.

I have used GMdieseltechs' procedure: no lube on o-rings and a very light coating or petroleum jelly on center rubber bushing. No leaks or other problems so far. Hand tighten.
not lubed it at all, gets sucked with Diesel anyway, hand tighten
did it 2 times yet, no apparant leaks
don't forget to bleed, better remove fuel residue and eventually dirt before putting new element into bowl

That's the way Dad taught me to do it years ago. I do it the same. Just be sure you don't use too much grease and it seems to work just fine.

I use a dab of motor oil....
dab is a technical measurement,,,,,
1 dab = .007 milliliters =.000236 oz.

I use about 1.5 dabs of white grease or motor oil, whichever is closer to me at the time. I would recommend cleaning the surface of the filter housing just to be sure it's good and clean. Putting dirt in your system kinda defeats the purpose of changing the filter.
