I have an 05 duramax. I am interested in upgrading my exhaust. Several questions:

1. Is the cat deletion really necessary? I live in CA and I wonder if the performance gain is worth the potential hassle.

2. Muffler delete? Is there a significant gain? How much louder will it be?

3. An aftermarket exhaust like the MRBP system. Is this something I should reasonably be able to install in my driveway or does it need to go to a muffler shop?

4. Dual exhaust do anything other than look cool?

5. Is 5" overkill?

I am not chiped and I don't want to dragrace. I just want the benefits of better milage and towing.

I'd do a 4 inch exhaust. I probably wouldn't do a dual if you aren't into modding the truck. The system will help with keeping the EGT's lower while towing. I haven't heard of any major benefit of going to a 5 inch system over a 4 inch system. The MBRP system fit perfectly on my truck and I installed it in my driveway. I used the muffler but there are some people who used a muffler delete pipe and like their systems. I can't tell you the difference in sound but I like the way mine sounds. I'm not going to tell you to take off the cat but I'm not unhappy with what I did with mine.
