hey yall, I have been working around and driving diesels since I was tall enough to reach the pedals around our family farms. For one reason or another, i have never actually owned one though. I am getting ready to purchase one because i am buying and selling cattle and commodities in larger quantities and also considering doing a little hot shotting during my summers in college. I already decided that i want a 3500 dually, of either of the 3 brands, im just not sure what kind, also, what is the most mileage you would buy a diesel with? I saw an ad for a 99 f-350 with 299k on it but wonder if its too much, thanks in advance guys.

The 7.3s are workhorses but kinda slow, the 6.0 liter Fords have alot of major engine problems, especially when modded. The 12v Dodges are also workhorses but also slow. The 24v Dodges have the VP44 injection pump crap out alot if you don't get an aftermarket lift pump. The Duramaxes all have respective problems depending on the years. Try looking at the engine sections on here. You are gonna see alot of problems on here because this is where people come to get help.
Oh yeah, welcome and I hope this very brief summary helps.

I owned a Dodge before my DMAX....Motor is great, but everything else was falling apart. My 05 HD2500 also rides much better than the Dodge. Fords...too heavy and poor fuel economy...their 6.0 has a lot of problems...
#1 DMAX
#2 Dodge
#3 Walk
#4 Ford
Just a thought...Good luck with your pick

Welcome by the way..... good to see another NC member pop up.
Get the Dmax....you will never regeret it. My obvious choice would be an '06 or '07 classic with the LBZ motor and 6 speed allison..... That being said.....they are all good motors, and each one has its ups and downs. Spend a little time (will end up being a lot of time) on here and you'll learn a lot about each motor and the tranny's, etc.... Research is always a good thing before jumping right in and buying one.
P.S. I'm not too far from you..... I live out in Johnston County. And my wife's folks own some land up in Granville county where I hunt every year.

Understood. I was going to say.... I saw an '05 White Dually sitting at Smithfield Chevrolet today. Must have just been traded in because I haven't seen it there recently.
Your probably going to be in the market for a higher mileage (150,000 +) 01-03 or so in the price range if I had to guess.
If I run across something out this way I'll let you know.
