Hard to believe I could mess up such a simple procedure but it happened! I purchased some NAPA spin-on filters to do my transmission changes. Tonight, after changing the front differential fluid, I decided to do the tranny filter too. I removed the old filter and cleaned the magnet. Placed the magnet on the new napa filter and screwed it on the tranny (in poor lighting I might add). After screwing the filter down as hard as I could with my hands, I started the truck and shifted it into reverse to back it out of my garage...nothing. I quickly realized that something was wrong and shut down the truck. I opened my door and my floor was covered with Transynd transmission fluid. I grabbed one of the Napa filters to compare it to the one I removed and realized that it was the wrong filter! I am going to Allison first thing in the morning to get the correct filter and some more fluid but I have two questions: 1. What are the chances that I have ruined the threads on the filter post?? The filter screwed on pretty easily but felt odd when I was doing the final tightening. 2. Will the transmission function properly once the fluid is replaced?? Anything else I should be considering? Thanks.

I guess after cleaning up the mess so you can get under the truck, do look at the threads and see if you can see anything wrong. I would try to see if the filter looks if is not all the way on to the housing. Might be hard to do since the edge of the filter might be covering up the edge of the filter gasket. Using filters that are not oem's can give you a lot of problems. Good luck...

Not sure how much a napa filter costs but I can get oem allison filters from the local allison dealer for 8$ a piece. I doubt you messed anything up if the filter started easily. It probably felt funny when you tightened it becuase you never tightened the filter against the rubber seal ring. You probably tightened it against the metal around the threads, or something like that.

I'd agree. The Allison design filter has a non-standard tall seal cross-section that is captured in a counterbore on the converter housing. If you put on a regular oil filter, the seal won't be tall enough to contact the seat.

Also, check that the magnet isn't broken leaving pieces and the center tube the filter screws onto is tightened all the way up into the converter housing.

If it make you feel anybetter, when I first bought my viper and did my first oil change I didn't dawn on my that the viper took 10 quarts. I used a 5 quart drain pan, well I went inside to eat lunch thinking I will wait untill all the oil is out and then come back. Well I come back to a big mess with about 5 quarts all over my garage floor. Shit happens to the best of us

Probably have the old gasket still stuck to the tranny, that will cause a major leak. I have used alot of Wix and Napa filters,(they are the same thing) and have had 0 issues on my truck.

Thanks. I went to the Allison parts store this morning and purchased a couple of the Allison filters along with a couple of gallons of TranSynd to replace what was what was deposited on the floor of my garage. Spoke to one of their transmission experts that said no damage should have been done since it was shut down so quickly. Let's hope! I'll have to come up with a new screw-up since I think this experience will keep me from making this mistake again.

To be specific, it wasn't a problem with the NAPA filter design it was actually the wrong model number. Put the correct filter on tonight and re-filled the transmission fluid - everything good so far. Thanks for the input.
