has anybody found that any of their stock steele rims work well on the back but create a bounce/vibration when rotated to the front? ... we have found 2 of our 7 rims to be this way

Its interesting that you mentioned this. My truck has just turned 36,000 miles and I have had vibration since I had them rotated at 18,000. I had them rotated at about 9,000 miles with no ill effects, however, I had a different company rotate the tires at 18,000 miles and they have been bouncing ever since. I just had the tires balanced again at 36,000 miles and there was minimal bounce/vibration, but with increasing miles (< 200 miles) the vibration is back.

I just ordered a set of centramatics on-wheel balancers today. I'll be interested to see if this might fix the problem.

Always watch how they rotate them. They must be rotated so that the tires still turn the same direction as their previous place. (At least for the front wheels, the back don't matter so much.) After some driving that bounce/shake will come out of it mostly.

Right front --> to inside right
inside right --> to outside left
outside left --> to right front

Left front --> to inside left
inside left --> to outside right
outside right --> to left front

If you do it that way there shouldn't be any shake. After I started to rotate them that way I've had no problems. There are probably other ways to do it but as long as the tire never changes direction of rotation you'll be good.

I hate how they rust because the rocks hit em. The gray paint only goes so far. Meh.

thanks for the recommendation ... I have been having the local tire shop follow GM's recommendation as given in the truck's owner's manual ... a while back I was told (at a Goodyear Tire place) that they often find dually rims that won't work on the front ... they attribute it to the offset in the rim ... we currently have over 88,000 miles on the truck and are on the second set of tires ... have rotated them every 5,000 and am convinced that 2 of the stock 7 rims are out of round enough to not work on the front

Well, that could be but I've had a '98, '01 and an '05 dually and if the tires get rotated wrong I always had a problem.

I had problems getting a good balance also from a Goodyear tire store. I took it to Discount Tire and they do a balance where they position the tire to the best balance position on the wheel and then they balance to the tire and wheel and add weights. They are so smooth now that it is hard to believe I am driving the same truck. I have never had any run this good.

My rims are so bad, I'm considering Alcoas.

had the OEM replacement tires balanced that way when they were installed and it most certainly makes a positive difference ... this problem with two of the rims on our truck has been consistent since day 1 .. absolutely no signs of unusual tire wear and they don't cause a detectable problem on the rear, put them on the front and you can feel a vibration in the steering wheel that isn't there when they are on the rear

My '03 was really bad, "goodyear tires" But got 165,000 mi out of them. My '04 doesn't seem to have it as bad "American General tires" allmost wore out at 108,000 mi. Balancing didn't help. I rotate every 8 to 10,000 mi per manual, 7 tire. Will have to try that "same direction" deal next time. Oh sh-t, that's today and it's gonna be in the 90's. Where's my beer hat and jack? :grd:

Well, I said in an earlier post that I was considering Alcoas. I just ordered a set from SW Wheel and they should be here next week. I also ordered Bilstein shocks. That ought to knock down the shaking and keep the beer from foaming. (j/k)

I rotated my six last week keeping them all running the same direction and they are very smooth. This was the first rotation on the truck and it has 21,000 miles. The outside edges of the fronts were showing slightly more wear than the rest of the tires. Other wise they were all wearing very evenly.
