: Whats got better sound 4" or 5" and which brand
mille-ryan 05-16-2005, 10:16 AM HEllo all Ive been doing a lot a searching on the site for different system opinions and sometimes its just all seems to run together. So heres my ? what is gonna produce a better sound and better mileage and power as far as that goes, 4 or 5 inch systems. Also Im leaning to the MBRP system but have been looking into the Moto BLue one as well, anyone have good or bad to say on the blue system? Another question on the same line ,what benefit is there to running no CAT, and would I be able to pass emisions with it gone, we have to get deisels dynoed every year or to here in COlo. Thanks and sorry for running on.
:grd:
ratlover 05-16-2005, 10:20 AM Sound is very subjective, I would try to listen to em in person. Maybe go to one of the dyno or drag days or something or find some local guys to give you a ride? The biggest thing isnt size but the muffler. 5" tail will make it a bit deeper.
Do you have a LLY or a LB7?
Try putting some basic info about your ride in your sig. It helps us help help you :)
Oh, and do you tow anything??? What do you want it to sound like? how loud ect?
mille-ryan 05-16-2005, 10:51 AM Ok tried to update sig, might take some time i guess. I have an 03 Durumax and just dont like not hearing the exhayst at all. Most of my driving is to from work and highway unlaoded.Gonna be towing a trailer an about 4 bikes out to Cali this summer.I dont wan t extreemly loud but it wouldnt killl me either.
ratlover 05-16-2005, 10:55 AM If your towing you want it coming out the side IMO. TTS supposedly makes a pretty queit exhaust. I like the sound of MBRP but its fairly loud.
Oh, yanking the cat will drop egt's a bit and flunk you on a vis smog test but not hurt the truck. Make it a bit louder too. I say kill the kitty but thats just me:muahaha:
mille-ryan 05-16-2005, 10:59 AM LOL thanks, I may have to keep the CAT till the drop emissions here, sposed to go away with them so were told. And I was planning on side exit like normal, just posted that other to see whod seen em.
ratlover 05-16-2005, 11:34 AM I have an exhaust from kennedy, the 4"-5" with the muff removed. I like my stuff loud:cool: Some prefer quiter(or thier wife would prefer quiter so they dont have a say in the matter) or some people tow. Its all subjective
Marbee40 05-17-2005, 11:49 PM Just installed my 4/5 Kennedy and noted the following:
Idle: Slightly tinny w/ vacuum like sound
Throttle blip while parked: Sharp WHAM!
Full throttle, turbo spooling: WOW! Deep jet-like sound):h
Towing 30'/13k Toyhauler at 75 while passing little cars: BWWWWAAAAAAAA!
Towing at certain speeds caused a bit of an annoying drone, but changing speed a few MPH was all it took to make it more than tolerable. Just driving with the windows up, a little music on, and the throttle pegged is real nice.
HTH.
MXdiesel 05-18-2005, 02:40 AM I too would kill the kitty. When I did it I had my regrets at first, but i couldnt be happier now that i did it. And as you know, get the fingerstick and EGR blocker. If u do just make sure you get a system that will use the flange so that you can bolt back in the kitty if you need to. Killing the kitty will give you a little more sound. And allot more turbo whine. :p:
Mark Craig 05-18-2005, 10:39 AM mille-ryan,
Check out our site, we have the MBRP system with sound bites you can listen to if you want. We also have 5 inch systems, but 4 inch is good for 500 RWHP. Call us if you have any questions etc.

Denali02 05-18-2005, 04:06 PM Mark Craig - where's the link to the sound bite on your site? Coulnt find it.
IBDMAX'IN 05-18-2005, 05:04 PM Colorado doesn't require cat's. You could take it off and pass emissions just fine, you truck must have been set up for cali emissions.
mille-ryan 05-18-2005, 07:45 PM Aww ok, well I guess that makes it easier.I just know we have emissions, didnt know if id pass with no cat or not.Colorado doesn't require cat's. You could take it off and pass emissions just fine, you truck must have been set up for cali emissions.
Mark Craig 05-19-2005, 11:28 AM Denali,
It's right here, http://www.dieselperformanceparts.com/duramax_stainless.html
go to Duramax, then stainless and scroll to the bottom of the page.

mille-ryan 05-19-2005, 06:19 PM Just so ya know Mark, the sound file hasnt been working for me for about a week.
Diesel Tech 05-19-2005, 08:48 PM If your looking for queit we have you covered. Our 4" exhaust is 1 db loader than stock as measured in the cab so most people notice little if any difference in exhaust volume/level. When you put your foot into it you will hear a lower tone note than stock. We designed it for the trailer tow crowd not the young kid market that likes them load.
mgmack 05-19-2005, 10:03 PM If I want to put a kittyless exhaust on my lly should I just buy a setup for an lb7 turbo back? Will it bolt onto an lly? I want 4" turbo back with no kitty.
Idryfly5 05-19-2005, 10:07 PM ive got a diesel pro 4" mandrel bent downpipe back and it sounds AWESOME!!! great low tone when driving and when you stick your foot in it. the only bad thing that i noticed was that it was a b**ch to put it.
MaddDogg49 05-21-2005, 11:12 AM Diesel dont have emissions there safety... I bought my truck at a dealership slighty used and they said they put the stock exhaust on and after alittle bit i looked under my truck(first diesel) and was like huhhh no Kitty under here... so who knows with CO
Mark Craig 05-23-2005, 11:41 AM mgmack,
Yes sort of. The MBRP systems we sell bolt on to the 4 bolt flange, they are all the same LB7 or LLY. The front pipe is available as an option and bolts to the turbo down pipe and then to the 4 bolt flange. This way the LB7 folks can have 4 inch all the way or not, and the LLY folks can go catless and 4 inch all the way (only if they off road or race).
Keeps the systems easy to install and keesp folks from cutting up their cat (very expensive item) to fit a system without the flange being there to bolt to.
Give us a call if you have any questions etc.
