I just bought a 88 chevy suburban with a 6.2 L banks turbo diesel engine. The truck is in excellent shape and was very taken care of. The engine is not the original, it's a rebuild with approximately 16,000 mile on it.
There is a metealic tapping sound when the truck is running. The sound seems to be comming from under the truck in the area of where the engine meets the transmission.
I've never owned a diesel, so I don't have a clue on what the problem is.
The other issue is how do i determine what kind of master cylinder I have?

what do you need to know about the master cylinder? also is it auto or manual?

If it is automatic, check to see if the torque converter yo flex plate bolts are tight.

x2 take off inspection cover and look for loose bolts, broken convertor mount

Well I don't know what kind of master cylinder. Wasn't sure if it would be a different one because it's diesel.
It's an automatic, but I'm use to seeing a power break buster behind the master cylinder and there isn't one. There is something else. That again, I have no idea what it is.
Thanks for all of the help from those who responded.

What you're used to is vacuum boost brakes. That something else is the hydroboost. Hydraulic instead of vacuum, runs off power steering pump.

the hydroboost works better than a vacuum booster IMHO but it only has 1 reserve power brake cycle after the engine is off compared to the many a vacuum booster has
