: Mike L. trans cooler gets KUDOS award
Super Diesel 05-16-2005, 04:15 AM Headed out for a emergency trip this weekend over the Rockys and though the desert. WOW, what a difference Mikes trans cooler made. With the full ATS, I use to see temps between 200 and 245, and rarely close to 200. This was just cruzin with a total weight of 14,500. Now, same load and temps it was hard to get it to 200. It just sat at 180-190 over all the passes (a few over 10,500ft) and through the desert (it was 70-90 deg temps out side in the hot spots). This is a thing that use to get me worried all the time before. Not now baby! Thanks Mike. Way to go and wonderful job man. Worth its weight in gold!
smoop 05-16-2005, 09:57 AM You are right on Super Diesel. Mike did an outstanding job on his cooler. Not only does it keep the Ally cool but the 15 min install is the iceing on the cake.
Sun Coast will be having these coolers in stock for our customers.
"Great job" Mike

Mac, are you seeing lower temps with Mike's cooler?
Well By George, you know the answer to that question. But if you don't,That would be a negative. But I sure could use it right about now.
Like yours mine is sitting in my office still in the box.I don't want any of that old Censored running thru it.I'll wait and install with the
ATS transmission.
But your right does look good and I will get it on ASAP.
I'll be sure and let you know. :)

Just a report on the H2s you sent me. They get no brake dust, no road dirt, never have to polish the chrome. They do get fingerprints from friends ( members here) looking at them. They look too good to put on. NOT ):h

JakeGMCHD 05-20-2005, 09:29 PM I'm waiting for the Brown Truck to deliver mine.
Coyzter 05-20-2005, 11:49 PM I have one of the 2004.5's that overheats. I was wondering if the lower tranny temps is also helping to lower the engine temps? Could someone tell me how to get ahold of Mike L. so I can order one of these coolers? I'll try anything at this point Thanks.

cadent45 05-21-2005, 04:47 PM Good news to report. Not a scientific test, but a good one no less. After installing Mike L’s new cooler I hooked up the 5er and took it for a climb. I went north on I-5 from Castaic Lake to the top of the hill, a 5 mile grade that rises to about 3,500 to 4,000 feet at the Templin Hwy off ramp. According to my mirror sensor, outside temps were at 92*. Trailer was not fully loaded, and neither was the truck, but for 17k lbs total between the two, it was fairly weighted down. Depending upon traffic, (big rigs tend go at this between 20 and 40 mph) my speeds varied between 40 to 65 mph. I never went below 40 mph in 3rd gear at 3k rpm’s, and was mostly in 4th gear at 55 to 60 mph at about 2,500 rpm. The verdict? According to the factory gauges, tranny temps never rose over 185*, and the engine temp never rose over 205*. I am very pleased with the results, but I am anxiously awaiting Mike’s newest feature, the electric cooling fan in front of the tranny cooler!!
THANKS MIKE!!!! I really appreciate your efforts!!!

What he said...
Trippin 05-22-2005, 06:42 PM Are there any side by side comparison pics?
Side by side comparisons have been numerous. So far it is a minimum of a 20 degree drop in tranny temps. :D
lakingslayer 05-22-2005, 08:47 PM Awesome -- what's the damage $ wise? It also looks easy to install -- is it?
PM Mike L and he will give you a price. From talking to Mike it's easy to install.

Mr. Trippin
You will finally get your cooler back on Tuesday, you have been without too long. For those of you guys that don't know, Trippin did the testing on my cooler on his truck. :hail: :thankyou2

Mackin 05-27-2005, 05:59 PM That would be great!!!! Thanks
Bug Tony he has the Pics! The cooler is nice, real nice and it's installed!Certainly not intrusive in the way of air deflection compared to the baby stock cooler, but definitely thicker. The stock cooler is a joke compared to the MikeL cooler he's offering to us.Easy install?Real easy,I mean real easy!
Nice addition that's for sure!Bet it works awesome :)
Can't wait to reap the rewards of cooler temps

SethMcKinney 05-31-2005, 04:51 PM Could you explainify that clear tube? Why aren't they leading into the cooler? Maybe stupid question, but I just don't know why that's there.
dmaxlover 05-31-2005, 05:25 PM Could you explainify that clear tube? Why aren't they leading into the cooler? Maybe stupid question, but I just don't know why that's there.
I believe the clear tube is just looped from the in and out line to keep fluid from leaking during the installation. Once the cooler in bolted in the tube would be removed, and the lines hook up to the cooler.
XR-Freak 05-31-2005, 06:36 PM Thanks Mike,
I recieved mine in the mail and I will install it after I do the testing for my overheating problem with a dealer tech. You know how dealers are:confuzeld :drinking: :duh: :Pshyco: they will find anything to blame but the problem itself. I wouldn't be surprised if they blame my overheating problem on my supertanks fuel cell. I wouldn't be surprised at all. If they try and pull thatCensored on me I'll put the stocky back on and make um eat it.
Anyways the cooler looks Awesome. Thanks again
Gruber 05-31-2005, 07:24 PM Well let me jump on the Mike L Tranny cooler Bandwagon. I had a trip planned and decided to get Mike's cooler. Since I live close to LA I gave Mike a call and met him at his shop at 7am(he was only a couple of minutes late). What a nice guy. We yakked for 30 minutes and I bummed a couple of smokes off him. He finally breaks out the cooler which I was dying to see and proceeds to install it for me personally. Very nicely made with nice brackets and it bolted right on no hassles. Then we yakked for another 30 or forty minutes and I bummed another smoke and left. Now for the results! I hopped on the scale on the way out of town and weighed in at 16,400lbs with the complete package on my sig. 10:30am departure for Needles, Ca across the Mojave Desert outside temp at 97 on the mirror. I calculate the marks on the stock ga.
to be 12 1/2 degrees increments. I never went over 188 and cruised at 180. I then went from there across Hiway 58 over the Tehachapi's same story. From there up to Yosemite and then across 46 and the Diablo Mtns to Paso Roble same story. I also noticed that when the temp went up it also cooled down rapidly. I climbed a lot of hills on this 1700 mile trip and I can't say how pleased I am with Mike's cooler. BTW I was set on level 2 with the Edge and consistently ran at 65 and 70 mph.
Thanks for the great cooler Mike and excuse the barb I had to throw it in.......Cal
SethMcKinney 05-31-2005, 07:37 PM I'm definitely getting me one of these -- eventually.
Mike L. 05-31-2005, 11:03 PM Cal
Thanks for coming to my shop. It was my pleasure to work on your Duramax.

GMC-2002-Dmax 06-01-2005, 12:56 AM Could you explainify that clear tube? Why aren't they leading into the cooler? Maybe stupid question, but I just don't know why that's there.
The clear tube was used to bypass the new cooler until the transmission was swapped and the lines could be properly flush of debris and blown out clean with compressed air.
It was installed so that the new ATS V transmission could benifit from the lower temps right from the start.........
The clear line was used so that we could see what and how much fluid the tranny was pushing...........it had almost ZERO pressure at idle and intermittent pressure at 1500 rpm, due to debris plugging everything up.

Mackin 06-01-2005, 05:57 AM It WORKS!
Not only keeping the tranny cooler driving but stop and go traffic, and idling.I was real amazed in traffic yesterday, big differance :)
I also got to do the touch in and out when it was idling before I put the grill back on.Real cool the way you can feel the difference.
It's a keeper all the way :thumb:
KTDURAMAX 06-02-2005, 01:41 PM What color is stock Trans fluid from the factory. Is it still pinkish like Dex III?
rudy fontana 06-05-2005, 06:02 PM Got my trans cooler installed yesterday. It is way simple like everybody has been saying. I put it together while I watched my daughter ride her bike on my cul de sac. So far my temps have only gotten to 150 degrees. Havent noticed any increase in the engine temp either. Seems to be working well. I will put it to work next week when I tow my travel trailer to San Diego.
Big Papa 06-08-2005, 10:55 AM It was a two beer job:( ... I should work slower. Thanks Mike for a great product and tech help. Maybe the instructions were too good.;)
Thanks again
How do you hook up this cooler. The bolt up looks easy but I was wondering how hard is it to hook up the lines and take the grill off?
Mike L. 06-12-2005, 03:58 PM How do you hook up this cooler. The bolt up looks easy but I was wondering how hard is it to hook up the lines and take the grill off?
Very easy. Grills snap off and on except for GMCs and early Chevys where there is another minute of work. Cooler lines snap out and snap back in with clips.
mike.
Mackin 06-12-2005, 05:22 PM What color is stock Trans fluid from the factory. Is it still pinkish like Dex III?
More like Red~ :)

mike.
It's very simple.I had to remove the brace connected to the grill by the emblem on my truck. Some how it must push into the lower stock cooler brace,no biggie.
You pull the clips on the fittings just like the ones on the tranny Jiffy-tite I believe they call them. You can reinstall the lines with the clips in as it will snap together then.
On the new cooler I recommend using your pinky to wet the internal O-ring for security in the fitting with a dab or two of fluid,if your going to just "snap" it in as I mentioned.
It's a very simple bolt on!
The clip that is being referenced that is removed with a simple small flat head screw driver. See this site (http://snyder-manufacturing.com/jiffyTiteStore.htm)

fredw 06-14-2005, 12:43 AM has anyone seen how much this will raise the engine water temps from the bigger surface area of the new cooler directly in front of the engine rad, or is it no biggie, i ussally see higher engine water temps when tranny oil temps are high, thats why
Super Diesel 06-14-2005, 01:15 AM I've had absolutly no problems with that so far.
Mike L. 06-14-2005, 11:07 AM Engine temps have been checked with Tech 2 after cooler installs and I have seen no rise in temps whatsoever. All tests were done with Tech 2, not watching gauges which can be very inacurate.

:exactly:I have not noticed any rise in engine temps with my cooler installed. I use the Attitude monitor which gives a much better temperature indication than the Factory guage.
fredw 06-14-2005, 10:56 PM so i read threw this all and no price i can see, so what is it mike, how many hundreds of bushels will i need to sell
blizzardplowman 06-14-2005, 11:44 PM Got mine installed tonight- Very nice- will tow this weekend and report back. On another subject the Dealer is installing a new fan clutch Thursday so it's a double check to see how cool she is.

Send Mike L a PM and he can quote ya.................
Well worth the penny's............
GMC-2002-Dmax 06-18-2005, 10:44 PM Got the cooler on today..........made at least a 20 degree drop in temps........
Mac was on the test ride after we installed it and the ATS Co-Pilot and we floged it pretty good..........temps never hit 150 on the gauge and my aux. gauge that picks up sump temp never even went over 110-120.
This thing works.
:cool2:
JJs DuMax 07-06-2005, 10:52 PM Finally got around to installing the MikeL cooler this evening. Very easy install, even for a SMC (severely mechanically challenged) person like myself. ):h Great job MikeL. JJ :)
KTDURAMAX 07-28-2005, 04:09 PM I agree with the others, very easy install and worth the $$$. Works as claimed (20* cooler). When tranny temps did get high (stop/go traffic), it is able to cool down back to 180-185* once you get moving again :ro) unlike the stock one Censored
P.S. I have a stock trans cooler for sale ;) ;) ;)
