: Vibration from driveline on Lowered Dually

I'm pretty sure the vibration I am getting is coming from my driveshaft. The truck has a 5/7 drop on it and is getting a bad vibration in the middle to rear of the truck at higher speeds. My question is....there are carrier bearing shim kits that are available, is this the way to go? Has anyone had a similar issue?

Thanks- Ken

I remember reading a while back on a different forum that the trans could need to be shimmed or the carrier bearing or both. Being that you said it started when you lowered your truck I am pretty sure you would need to shim your carrier bearing. Do you have any way to measure the angles your U joints have right now? Protractor of some type would work. I will try to find where I saw the thread on how to fix it and see what angles you need to have. Something like 7º minimum is coming to mind though but this was a few years back.

thanks, yes, that would be great if you could find that thread, I didn't lower the truck myself, I bought it like that. So I will have to double check if it has been shimmed yet or not. I am assuming it has, but maybe fell out of alignment...

pinion angle should be opposite 2-3º than your trans angle

I would go out and buy some shims for your rear diff and make the front of the diff point down about 2º from where you are now that should solve your problem.

What I ended up with is matching the angles of a stock truck. Just crawl under a stock unit and measure the angles of both driveline pieces and the angle of the trans. Also the pinion angle.

We then cut the bracket for the carrier bearing and slotted adjustment holes to be able to change it around. We then shimmed the rear to stock angle, tranny tail to stock angle and carrier to stock angle. All is fine.

Lowered 5 inches 2.5 shim to point the rear down, 1/2" of spacers under the trans mount to raise the rear of the trans up , vibration and "buzz" gone.
