Hello, The return line from the top of the tank started leaking again this time alot. I have to disconnect the lines and pull the tank out to see what is going on. The lines have some rust on them where the fittings bolt together. can i cut a small section of metal line out and replace it with rubber line and clamps when i put the tank back in? The only reason i ask cause it looks like a high pressure hose since it is rubber that turnes into metal. I know you can with a gas motor but i didn't know if diesel was any different. Thanks in advance.

Eric

I just thought of another question. So here is both of them.

1) can i cut a small section of metal line out and replace it with rubber line and clamps when i put the tank back in?

2) When i put the tank back in will it get all the air out of the system once i start it?

The return line has minimal pressure. Use whatever method you think will work best and be reliable.

I have the tank off now. It looks like the sending unit was rusted pretty bad and leaking. The tank has a couple spots of surface rust but looks good. I had to cut both lines off to get the tank off. I am going to put a small section of rubber lines to put it back in. D Camilleri said the retun line was ok to do that but how about the main line to the engine?

Thanks Eric

Just use fuel hose on both lines. There is not any pressure in either line. The tanks are installed with very short hose since they are installed before the bed is put on the truck. You will need at least a foot or more of extra hose length to get the hose and clamps on before you put the tank back up. Just let the extra hose make a loop on top of the tank. Be sure you put two strips of heavy tar paper between each bracket support and the tank or you will get a hole in your tank.

I got it done today. It fired right up with no problems. I drove it around a while and ran great. All the connections are dry. Thanks to all for the help.
