I think this one might get bad quick... Not sure of the reasoning but I know the answers are going to be funny...

Throw some 1" ball bearings in the crank case. They sound like they have parts rolling around inside to me. :)

:funnypost Sorry man the configuration of an inline six and a V8 just will not sound the same. There are just way too many variables that differentiate the two. Balance, firing order, displacement per cylinder to name a few. :) Also the Duramax was designed to quell the noises non-diesel buyers disliked so much. There is a huge mass of people who will never appreciate the values diesels offer because of their preconcieved notions. Have you heard a new 6.0 Powerstroke or Cummins 600 lately? They have also taken aim at the Duramax for silencing the diesel sound most of us know and love. They are all getting quieter, like it or not.

Find some way to shut down the pilot injection, i bet theres a way to do it. but i couldnt understand why you would want that, i like the quietness of the engine

Why would you want to make it louder? Yer going to kill the repatation of the quiteness of a duramax for someone wanting one that doesnt know how they really sound and if you find some way of turning off the pilot injection theres no dought your gonna throw alotta codes. Or you could record the sound from a cummins and put it your cd player in the truck.

Would you guys have any ideas on how to turn it off?? Has anybody ever done this? Would if have any longer term effects besides a different sound from the engine?? Thanks guys

IMHO

Just drive it and enjoy it.

I used to own a Ford P/S.

I kinda got tired of people running out to the street carrying garbage bags thinking the garbage truck was coming. :idiot:

That doesn't happen now that I got a DMAX. :beerchug:

I think the DMAX sounds great. Nice mixture of sound with quietness. :exactly:

This is exactly what I would do. Also I would put a PA speaker under the hood and play the Cummins sound on that so you could hear it outside the truck. This way when you go through a drive up you don't have to shut the truck off just the PA speaker.

I was at the Flying J and a late nineties Dodge Cummins pulled up opposite me. I couldn't hear myself think. I was thankful of my Duramax.

My brother had a 1990 Ram / Cummins straight piped it sounded like dang helicopter coming down the road. You heard him way before you could see him crest the hill. It was cool but not all hours of the day. He used to leave for work at 4:30 in the morning his neighbors probably wanted to lynch him.:snipersmi

Sitting in the cab, yell at the top of your lungs..."Klack, klack, klack,klack..." till your throat is sore and your voice is hoarse. Then start your nice, quiet DMax and putt away.

There were more than a few 6.5TD's that were pretty noisey. There you go, brand loyalty with diesel rackett... best of both.

Is their anyway to make a 01 duramax sound like a 98 cummins? Just wondering.... Do the tranny upgrade and I'll trade you my 01 cummins for your 01 Dmax. Mine has a stage v ATS tranny, it's lifted and puts out about 500 HP with 75,000 miles on it.

I guess all engines are a bit different. Mine is pretty loud for a Duramax. Its actually one of the louder Dmax engines I've heard don't know why. Its always serviced right. Its a good sound though, not complaining. Just strange?

You could plug in a Tech II and bump your fuel preassure for a few seconds. . .it will sound a lot like a 6.0 PS.

My "04" has had an engine rattle since about 700 miles. In the shop 3 times. It won't show any codes so they won't do anything.
Sounds like a cummins on steroids. Pulling a 7000lb. load with tow haul engaged is embarrasing where people can hear you. They think it is going to blow up. The mechanics can hear the noise but don't know what it is. They guess lifters, injectors & all kinds of things, but no fixes. I just crank up the tunes & pretend it is one of those quiet D'Max's.

Mine is also LOUD for a Dmax. The dealer checked it once and said it was normal. Compared to my neighbor with a 2005 Cummins, I sound like the Cummins! I am used to it now and kinda like it. ;)

I remember that the early Quad tunes had too much timing and would make the engine rattle worse.
