I'm a new member to the site and to diesels as well. I have a 1996
chevy ext cab long bed 4x4, about 6000 miles ago a dealer replaced the injecter pump.now when i turn the key the glow plug light does not come on, it cranks fine and white smoke puffs out the tailpipe.the truck only has 106,000 miles on it and the vin letter is ''F''

check fuse panel under the hood and in the door jam.
I think you'll find a burnt ECM A or B or Glowplug fuse.

Check your glow plug relay, when my glows stopped working the connection which was not tight and burnt off. It's on the back of the engine on the drivers side, a four wire harness in the top and 10guage wires in and out for the glows.
