: Turbo Bark...any harm?

I decided to prove my friends wrong a and show them that a crew cab dually can indeed spin all 4 rear tires. Spooled up the turbo with the brake slammed and then when I hit about 8 psi let off the brakes and got major smoke and tire spin:ro) However, when I let off the accelerator, I got a pretty good bark...woof,woof,woof, woof. Any harm done here? 1st time I've ever done this. Was fun doing it, not going to let of the accel so fast next time.

Repeated barking is hard on the turbo. I doubt that doing occassionally is going to hurt.

what exactly is a turbo 'bark'?

<--------------never had one

When you lift, the intake tract is filled with pressurized air and must go somewhere. It can't go into the cylinders fast enough, so instead it tries to go back out the aircleaner. In the process, it stops or reverses the turbo impeller. The bark you hear is air going back out the intake.

I am new to turbo diesels but not new to turbos. On my Twinturbo 300Z I had recirculation valves stock that recirculate the compressed air back into the air track with the throttle body is closed, that way you don't get that compressor surge and possible stop the impellers. The stock recircs were only good for holding about 15lbs of boost, so I now run blow off valves (vent the compressed air into the atmosphere). Would it not be the same with a diesel? On our gas cars compressor surge is bad on the turbo, and can happen anytime you let off the accelerator quickly while under boost. I would think it would be the same on the trucks???

I inquired about a blow off valve of some type a long time ago to circumvent the surge. I run a blower on my car and have to have that or blow something up. The LLY motors have no waste gates like the LB7's do and are controlled electronically with the veins/vanes on the turbo. There should be some way to vent this back somewhere other than the turbo.

Agreed..turbo bark isn't bad maybe once in a while, but repeatedly will hurt the impellar and related parts. I had it when I first got my truck and put the Edge on it, but have since never gotten it. I think the latest update on my ECU fixed that some how.

good luck

It happened to me this morning, twice in two shifts repeatedly. Yesterday I installed K&N intake, Banks six gun with speedloader and the exhaust. Cat back cause they sent the wrong one, turbo back is on the way, anyway. This morning about three blocks from the house the tranny shifted from 1st to 2nd and barked then 2nd to 3rd it also barked. The engine was not cold, it had been running about 4 or 5 minutes before I left and it was about 60 degrees outside. The throttle was about half way and the Banks was set on 2, cause it is needed with lift and 38's. It didn't happen again, maybe it is just a coincedence..........maybe not a "bark" it sounded like the engine farted :):exactly:

I have been having the same problems with turbo bark. My truck will do it all the time if i gas it but not all the to the floor. Take banks off and it goes away. Keep me informaed and i will let you know if i find out what is going on. I am working on some leads.

This is interesting. The only way I get turbo bark is whenever I do a burnout and lift too fast. Besides that, I get no bark.

I did some test runs with the Banks, and did not notice any bark either on the street or the strip. Very odd. I certainly did with the Edge First Edition.

I get the turbo bark under heavy exceleration and my truck is completely stock. It only has about 2200 miles on it. Should I have the dealer check it or don't worry about it? My truck runs great otherwise and is getting good fuel milage.
