I want to upgrade from 700r4 I think I need a 91-93 computer to run it?

Do I need sensors on a mech IP?

You would need the entire TCM and wiring harness. you would also need the TPS that goes on the injection pump.

OK I have a TPS and a plan for tailshalf sensor, how many other inputs are there on a mech IP 4l80e?

Do I need to put the oil pump drive with sensor in that the 6.5 TDs use? And is that an rpm sensor or something else?

Ya I just saw the driveline section , Ill ask there in the future.

The stock TCM needs the ESS (edit: on the vac pump) and TPS. The trans has the TISS, TOSS and gear range sensors in it.

The speedo is driven from the TOSS. There are adapters available to run a mechanical speedo from the sensor, pretty much just an electric motor. You may need the DRAC module too, can't remember is the motor thingy works directly from the sensor.

Nice swap on the 'Binder, got any pics?

I have an oil pump drive without the vacumn pump with a 2 wire terminal at the top I assume it is a ESS, guess Ill dig out the multi meter and see what it does when I spin it.

I posted all kinds of pics on the Binder Board as I did the swap, seems there was dissention amongst the ranks and it got all F***ed up, can't find my posts , cant find my pics, :( Not happy!

Basicly I had a rad recored to 3corre higheff. with a brass 6.2 oil cooler soldered into it. motor mounts of course were cut off frame and fabed from 2x3 3/16 wall rect tube. A 2" deep box welded over the cutout in firewall for Exh bypass casting. And a rework of the fan and heater box.

Ill post up some pics as I get this trans swap underway.

Still need a TCM and harness.

There are aftermarket TCMs and harnesses available. No one could give me a straight answer if the ESS on the Diesel would work. I kinda figured it'd involve some trips to radioshack and several long nights tinkering.

Most of these systems cost over $1K. add the cost of a junkyard 4L80E, about 500-800 bucks, overhaul if you're paranoid (about 900 out of the truck) and all the other doodads and it'll wind up costing around 2500-3K to do it properly. I researched this swap to death and still want to do it but that's a *lot* of scratch.

If you aren't pulling big trailers or running insane power, the 700-R4 should do ya just fine. (flame suit on) JY 700- about 2-300, overhaul- 5-700. 3.08 1st and .67 Overdrive- priceless.

I already have 3 700r4's, one fully built (87 diesel) in my Short Scout behind a 392 IC loadstar motor pushing a d300 twin sticked TF case. $3100 with the adapter(this thing Rocks). One spare stock 82-3 diesel, small input and pump, and one rebuilt 88 diesel behind my 86 6.2TD, it has never shifted well and it kicks out of 4th at the most inappropriatte times.

I also have a fresh rebuilt 4l80e ($3800reciept) I have about $500 and 20hrs of time pulling parts into, from a sierra1500 6.5 td.. And a pass drop lg input spline TF case from a T400? that bolts right on.

What I don't have is a ECM/TCM and harness. and direct application knowledge of OEM ECM and what I will get for shifting and holding 4th w/Lockup. Oh ya I don't have the money to go with aftermarket TCM so I want to see whay I can get what I want out of OEM stuff.

When I researched this, I found that the TCM from a 1991-93 2500/3500 series diesel truck/burb would work. These have no provisions for controlling emissions devices. There are others that'd work too, not sure of the application though. Vans and P chassis trucks (IE bread vans and motorhomes) had this setup too.

As for the wiring, you may be able to modify the harness from a TBI app if you cannot find the diesel one. This would require re-pinning, removal of the TBI specific stuff and adding the diesel specific connectors.

If that fails, you can get most of the GM weatherpak connectors at NAPA. Grab the ECM/TCM plugs from a wreck and build your own harness from there.

IIRC, The JET transmission controller used a standard GM TCM with a custom harness. I wonder if you could purchase the harness by itself?

all I could think of at the moment. I'll go thru my computer and see what I have.
good luck!

I could actually help you with the knowledge it would take on building a harness from the ground up.
You would need a reluctor at the crankshaft.
Transmission input speed sensor.
Vehicle speed sensor if you have a transfer.
Transmission output speed sensor if you prefer one of those.

PM me if you need to

No need for a crank sensor/reluctor. Mech pump trucks with the 4L80E use the vacuum pump/oil pump drive mounted ESS for engine speed sensing.

As far as TOSS/VSS goes, some 4WD trucks had a plug in the TOSS port on the trans and used the VSS on the transfer case. Depends on the year and model.

My trans is a 95 so it seems to have a sensor but im told no reluctor ring.

My tfcase is a 92 208 with a speedo drive and no sensor

seems I have to add one and I dont want to do a total dissasemble/reassemble on a 4l80e (or any auto)

HMM aftermarket VSS?
