Hi ,

I'm new to this forum and like to greet you all.
Since the end of juli I red hudreds of messages and don't find the wright info to get my machine running.

I drive a 1996 Silverado 4x4 with a 6.5 turbo diesel for 4 years now.
It must be the best engine you can think of, because the mylage is huge.
540,000 Km (335,600 Myles)
The engine is well maintained, running like clockwork and a good starter evenso at very low temperatures. The truck is Canadian imported in 1997.

Till 3 weeks ago..... No start

Below I filled in the D P checklist.

Hoping someone can gif me the golden tip (s).

you might want to loosen 1 injector line on drivers side front (not all the way off) to see if you are getting fuel to injectors. no fuel possible bad pmd or ip. just thought of this you may have a plugged screen at ip feed from filter assy.

have someone else crank the engine watch and make sure belt is turning when engine cranks. if not moving probable bad crank

remove hose from turbo to intake and check intake side (put hand over intake inlet DO NOT DO THIS ON THE TURBO) and feel for suction when cranking. if no suction probable timing chain/camshaft

if it is sucking spray some wd40 into intake while it is cranking (do not use STARTING FLUID) do not spray to excess. if it runs probable ip/pmd do pmd first. remote mount it outside of engine bay per site instructions or get a kit.

Thanks Wespierce,

A number of things I've done,...

Flushed the screenplug in gasoline and purged with compressed air.
Loosen injector line, no fuel after 20 sec cranking.
Belt is turning.
Intakemanyfold is of, intake ports are sucking.
The "WD40 trick" makes the engine want to turn over for a few bangs.

So probably you'r diagnose is right, about PMD or IP.

The things I read about the PMD are telling me the PMD is responsible for high temp failure.
Can it be that bad, it doesn't work in cold state also ???????

Please respond.... (anyone)

Hi,

can someone tell me what the resistance (in ohm) should be, of the fuel solenoid of a DS4 injectionpump.

I'm trying to close out all the probable causes before by buying a new PMD.

Hope anyone knows the values

crank is probabley not broken
timing chain is working along with the camshaft turning
ip should be turning as it is being driven off of the timing chain

the pmd fails due to high temp and i suspect the minut vibration of the components even tho encapsulated in a plastic medium broken solder joints in the unit. the heat is generated by the large power transistors that are used and the internal resistance of transistors. this is one of the reason now that on most modern units (not pmds) power mosfets are used. they have extreemly low forward restance and do not generate much heat during operation.
one reason pmds do not work when cold is when electronic units go through the heat/cold cycle thermal stress builds up and finally cracks the solder. the other is actual electronic failure in the pmd from the excess heat.

the origional concept of mounting the pmd on the pump was to let the excess unused fuel to help cool the pump and pmd by pumping the heated fuel back to the fuel tank via the return line. if you continously keep your tank in a low fuel state feel how warm the fuel tank is above ambient temp after driving for an hr or so.

the wd40 has proved the the engine has sufficent compression to fire and heat from the glow plugs to allow the very light oil (0 weight) to ignite in conjunction with the propellents.

the fact you have no fuel at the injector is another indicator of a bad pmd or ip.

there is another post about the fuel shutoff solonid on the ip. this is another possibility that the fuel shutoff solonide wire has come off and the pump is not passing fuel for that reason.
with your multimeter check for 12v at the wire (it is about a 12-14 ga. usually pink in color) on the left top side of the ip (on a ds2 should be same place on ds4) when the ignition is on. if no 12v you have a fuse/ignition/wiring problem. if 12v disconnect wire with ignition off and measure the resistance of the connector on the ip to the ip ground. i do not have the exact restance but it will be lower than 20k ohms. this does not guarentee that the solonide is not bad but it is a low failure item.

if those tests are good i would try a pmd yes they are expensive but they are less than an ip. again i stress remote mounting on a large heatsink, use computer processor grade heat sink compound to help with the heat transfer...

Thanks Wes,

I'll check some other things first, like minor groundings.
Than a new pmd will be bought.
For a heatsink I think I will use a flat aluminum aircooled two-stroke engine cylinderhead from an old lawnmower. (6" x 8")

Hope it runs

PS

Driving my other car to work will turn me bankrupt.

(Chevy Corvette 1982, 5.7, with a gasprice of €1.45 /liter = $ 8.- / Gallon)

How much is diesel fuel?

In holland, for example Texaco dieselfuel, costs
€ 1.09 / liter. (1.09 * 1.4 * 3.8 = $5.79 / gallon

dyed diesel, low tax for tractors, ships and other non highway machines, costs about
$ 4.50 / gallon

I hope you got i running. If you did, please post what you found.

If not, I would double check 3 connectors are fully seated:
PMD connector at PMD, 2 connectors that come out from under the intake manifold by the firewall. These 2 connectors come back to the firewall in the same protective sheath, one is oval, and the other is rectangular. If these are all seated, I would personnaly try the following:

find my old PMD, plug it in and see of there is any difference ( don't do this with a new one, as the heat can ruin it quickly... you can't hurt the one you already replaced) If This makes it start, I would buy a remote mounted PMD kit, If the old PMD doesn't change anything, I'd start verifying the section of harness I described above. If you do this, maybe someone on here has a pin diagram so you know exactly what wires/pins to check.
