: Question for guys with 285's

I have a question for you guys that are running 285's on the stock rim. What is everyone running for tire pressure? The reason I ask is because I want to make srue that the tires will wear evenly. I noticed that mine seem to be a little taller in the center. I kinda figured this seeing that they are a wider tire.
Thanks

William

I dont have stock rims, but have 285s I run mine at 35 psi in the back. run the fronts at suggested psi or 5psi below in the front.

Just keep dropping the air until it looks flat across, dont think you want to go lower than 30/35 psi & this is for driving unloaded

The reason your 285's are taller in the center is because of the stock rim width being too narrow. So in that case it squeezes the width of tire which cause the center of tire to bow out. I don't have the 285's but if I were to have them I probably would not run less than 50PSI.

Thats what I figured. Right now they have about 50lbs in them. I will probably lower them about 5lbs, give or take. Another question for ya, when I rotate them, I shouldn't have to have the truck aligned again should I? That could start hurting the wallet a little.
Thanks

To get the best wear out of your tire find the psi this way.
Take a piece of chalk and mark across the tread of your tire front and back. Drive a few feet look at the mark it should rub off evenly across the tread. If it wears in the center take out some air, wears on the edges put some in.

Are you guys comfortable towing heavy with 285s on stock wheels?

I tow an 8000lb travel trailer, very comfortable and smooth ride. I air up to 55psi in the rear when I tow, 50psi all around unloaded. I think I'll drop it to 45psi unloaded to see how that works out.

Nope it would not be necessary to have your truck realigned unless you made some suspension changes like adjusting the torsion bars. If your old stock tires should for some reason shows some uneven wear side by side then I'd get it realigned so it would not do the same thing with your sweet new set.

A year and half ago I cranked up 4 turns on mine without realignment and right now it appears there are just a bit of minor uneven wear side by side of the tire but I really don't care much for the stock tires. They sucks in snow, rain and mud, you know that very well. I plan to get a better and bigger set like yours in the fall and I will have the truck realigned & speedo corrected afterward.

Well after looking online at tire places, I have a follow up. Are there any 285s with an E rating? I cant find any.

BF Goodrich will have the 287/75/16 AT KO tires in load range E in the third quarter according to their web site.

I wore out a couple of sets of BFG 285 on stock wheels.

They worked good and I towed up to 15,000#.
They handled as good or better than the stock tires.
I ran max inflation in them when towing or hauling and 50psi the rest.

I've been running 42psi all 4 when empty and that seems to have been OK for the 8,000 mi I've run them. Getting ready to rotate next week and will take a close look. Might go to 45psi depending what I see. On stock alloys BTW.

I run my rears at 35-32 psi to try and keep the centers from wearing too bad on my 285 75 16 nitto's running the stock rims. I ran 50 psi all round and it wore the center pretty bad. I run 50 psi in the front and they are wearing great. I air up for hauling and towing but running empty definatly need to run less in the rear than the fronts.

I have 45psi in them right now. 30 some seems alittle low to me but I might try it because the center is still alittle high. Do you guys notice any differance in milage with the tires aired down? The reason I ask is because I am getting better milage then I have ever had with the stock tires on.
