: pulling fuse on lly to dissconnect odometer
oteo125 05-14-2005, 05:48 PM i know a guy that pulls some fuse in his fuse box that shuts down his intrusment cluster. he says he wants the full 3 year warrenty on his truck being as he would drive to many miles. i told him i didnt think it was a good idea that maybe it would throw a code or something and they could tell. he seems pretty smart and tells me they have no way of knowing being as nothing is cut or taken apart. he had done it for years on the fords that he has and they could not detect it. i just think that maybe the gm will set a code. im curious what you guys think. will he get caught or is he right?
briano 05-14-2005, 07:38 PM I'm not so sure about this.. the TechII will show usage on a number of things and that won't correspond to the mileage shown, they would know something is up, but not exactly.. if you get caught then your warranty is toast!
seems more efficient to pay the extra 5 bucks a month for an extended warranty.
just my $.02
aziator 05-14-2005, 07:44 PM Not only is the warranty toast if he gets caught, it is illegal (Odometer Fraud). He is no better than someone that rolls back an odometer to sell a car...
mole177 05-14-2005, 08:56 PM yup.
illegal tricks.
McRat 05-14-2005, 09:00 PM Mike L. knows about pulling fuses. PM him. Tell him McRat sent you.
_nar_ 05-14-2005, 09:31 PM Also really not a good idea if the truck gets hot or loses oil pressure or any number of things he won't know about.
GMCSID 05-14-2005, 10:23 PM What's his VIN#?;) :joke:
oteo125 05-14-2005, 10:27 PM i dont know his vin. he lives about 800 miles away.
Denali02 05-14-2005, 11:48 PM :nutkick: future buyer of your friends truck after he finds the miles have been tampered with. i would do worse. not cool.
Idle_Chatter 05-15-2005, 12:33 AM Yep, and after we help him disconnect his odometer, we can help him bypass his power meter, tie into his neighbor's water with a garden hose, steal and forge a few social security checks from mailboxes and clone a few credit cards. Guy's a freakin thief!
oteo125 05-15-2005, 06:48 PM i agree what he is doing is completly wrong. but he wasnt asking for your help to do it idle chatter. he kepps the trucks till the wheels fall off so the only person that really gets screwed is gm or ford if there is a warrenty claim. im not sticking up for him if thats what it sounds like just giving the facts.

Wow!!!!!!!!!
You have a few idea, did they work for you in the past????
Dmax Tim 05-16-2005, 08:48 AM Wow!!!!!!!!!

Past, he's still doing it
dozerboy 05-16-2005, 08:48 PM free cable too
Idle_Chatter 05-16-2005, 08:56 PM Yeah, it was late and I came off a bit harsh, but I hold to my opinion.
GMC2500HD 05-16-2005, 09:04 PM Yeah, it was late and I came off a bit harsh, but I hold to my opinion.
No reason to apologize. I think it is wrong to steal and do that kind of stuff. There is no reason for it. What will happen is he will try to get rid of that truck and then the red flags will go up.. That will be enough to get him in trouble.
oteo125 05-16-2005, 09:36 PM i hope there is a way for the dealership to detect this. i know how mad i would be if i got a truck that had been tampered with. i was hoping that one of these techs on here would tell me that the computer senses that but no one has really chimed in. im sure that anyone who does this will eventually get caught or it will come back to get them. i agree with you idle chatter that this guy is theif.
Thankful 05-16-2005, 09:38 PM Exodus chapter 20, verse 15:
"Thou shalt not steal."
From what i have been told from a friend at a dealership is it cannot be found UNLESS the dealership feels the truck has been tampered with and they can check through the computer and compare different files or something in it..It takes alot of work to figure out if it has been tampered with, on the dealers part so odds are you wont or he wont get caught...I maybe wrong on this but this is what i was told...Its stealing in my opion.. Just thought i would give you guys this info...But like i said it could be wrong...
David 05-17-2005, 02:31 AM Ther is a gizmo that you plug in to the computer and whatch the miles melt away.
And they don't always see it.
I saw it on the local news!!!!
If you steal from the stealer i may not feel so bad ,BUT it is not legal. OF course it is legal for them to steal from us!!!!!!!!!!!!!:drop_moutDavid
Leadfoot 05-17-2005, 07:48 AM i know a guy
Tell your "friend", that a heavy fine is awaiting him if he get's caught. I guess there is possible jail time as well but not usually enforced. A local used car dealer got nailed pretty hard a few months back for this exact same thing. Spend the extra on an extended warranty and don't worry about it. You (I mean the guy you know), will be much better off in the end.
Autoed 05-17-2005, 08:05 AM ...the only person that really gets screwed is gm or ford if there is a warrenty claim...
There are actually four fuses on some models, two for Batt power, two for Ign power. You'll lose your overhead console, Driver Info center, and ALL OF YOUR GAUGES.... How stupid is that???? Like driving a go-kart... gas and brake only... Who needs gauges anyway?
BTW- There will be Many codes stored in ALL of the other modules i.e. PCM, BCM, Driver's Door Module, Pass Door Module, Memory Seat Module, Onstar, Radio, ATC Module, Trans Control Module.- They will point to an inoperative IPC, without a doubt. The fingerprints will be all over the truck.
Good Luck fooling your "Stealer"
Ed
It's funny how most people set their own limits of good and bad. Here one person is trying to get a full 3yr. warranty (might do 500mi. a week highway at 55mph). Truck should take it with regular maintenance, right? Yet, he gets his face ripped off as a major thief. Did anyone that answered take their cat off or modify their EGR (unlawful, fineable, save the future for your kids)? Do any of you install larger tires or performance enhancing programs, then take them off to get warranty work done? Aren't you ripping off poor GM? Isn't the future owner that bought the 30,000 mi. truck getting ripped off because of the extra wear and tear you put on with the not approved by GM add ons you took off at trade in? Was ther any weapons of mass destruction? Do you believe in Karma?
DURAtotheMAX 05-21-2005, 07:18 PM The mileage is stored completely internally to the instrument cluster. Thats why guys that buy fancier clusters (for example an Escalade cluster) to dress up the IP have to send the cluster to a speedometer shop and have them program it. However...remember guys there are also HOURMETERS on our trucks... Those hours are stored in the PCM. So if you are buying a seemingly clean "25000 mile" truck, and you check the hour meter and it reads 6500 hours, its probably best to move on... And that tool the news was talking about...usually the news glosses over some major detail or 'catch' in order to make a story more dramatic. You need some serious equipment and knowledge to program (at least the 2003 and up) the instrument clusters. Some guys who dont have steering wheel controls from the factory have wired in switches (to act as the steering wheel buttons) just fine but ran into big problems because the cluster is programmed for a "non steering wheel control" truck. Programming mileage into a GM cluster costs like 100$ at a speedo shop...and alllmosstt all of the shops wont dig into the programming any further than mileage. (the only shop that does "steering wheel control conversions" of clusters is somewhere in California).
So yes, you could just unplug the cluster, but your hours still go up, and you will probably throw some major codes. And c'mon, you wont have any instruments!! Even the silly older F%rd instruments that were dampered (meaning they didnt indicate any problem until the engine was starting to spit parts onto the road) are better than no instruments at all!
And also, I agree with all you....its illegal!!! I didnt think anyone bothered tooling around with odometers anymore...its sad that some people feel the need to be so dishonest.

oteo125 05-24-2005, 07:14 AM i agree with the dishonesty that everone has mentioned here but geo does have a good point. ill bet alot of those that are calling this guy a thief have taken their cat off or are running chips that are removed when taken to dealer. interesting!
Idle_Chatter 05-24-2005, 07:23 AM My 2001 is a 48-state, no egr, no cat. I have factory rims and OEM tire size, I haven't taken my truck to the dealer in 3 years and 104,000 miles, so I haven't removed my Edge Juice. I pay my taxes and tell the truth. Guy's a thief.
