: Shaky mirrors question
Z71 Grizzly 08-05-2009, 10:23 PM Hi, I have the power extending mirrors on my truck and the mirror slightly shakes when driving lately. I checked the screws underneath and they are tight. Is there anything on the inside that is maybe loose or do I just have to live with it? Thank's, Adam
kcb37 08-05-2009, 11:16 PM The whole mirror?
I have not looked at mine yet. However on my 96 I recently put a new mirror on.
Take the 3 nuts off the inside mirror pulls off. Well one of the nut's just spun, wouldn't come off. Turns out it's a stud. The other side of the stud had broken loose in the mirrior.
May or may not apply to you, but it's an idea.

Do you have a bug deflector? My mirrors did not shake or vibrate until I installed my bug deflector. This was the case on the past couple trucks I have owned as well as this one.
jake111 08-06-2009, 02:57 AM A few years ago there were some discussions about the camper power extending mirror problems. The big ones tended to be (1) they stick and (2) the glass shakes.
I did a search and I think this had quite a write-up on fixing problems.

If I understood it, the way the glass is held in may be a little loose, so it shakes. Check Post #24 in the DIY link.
As featherbones points out, bug deflectors seem to add turbulence that can make a shaking mirror shake more.
My driver side mirror shakes, but it hasn't gotten any worse over the years and not enough to drive me to fix it. Since new, the passenger side needs help to break free when extending or retracting, if it's been in one position for awhile, but I just live with it.
Z71 Grizzly 08-06-2009, 11:45 PM Thank's guys. I do have a bug deflector and I'm sure it does add in the turbulence. Didn't really think about it for affecting the mirrors.
QuikSSilver 08-08-2009, 11:35 PM here you go.... this is how I fixed mine!(made a write up to help) everyone that has done it has told me it works perfectly!

bnbfishin 08-12-2009, 12:40 AM Yeah mine just stared shaking after installing my bug deflecter. Now I have yet another thing to work on this weekend. I need to quit reading on here as I am finding more and more things to do to my truck!

featherbones 08-12-2009, 12:44 AM My vent below the windshield also started making some noise above about 60 after I installed the bug shield.
Z71 Grizzly 08-13-2009, 11:25 PM Thank's quikssilver. I'll have to try that.

socal2ks 08-15-2009, 09:53 PM I have come to the conclusion that the mirrors shake due to the little "frame beaming" that I have left.
Hopefully deaver leaf springs will get rid of it.
How do I know this? try putting 1000lbs in the bed and the mirrors dont shake, well maybe just a tad, but you can actually make out what car is behind you.
EZ SPEED 09-14-2009, 08:43 PM I am gonna have to try this fix on my mirrors;)
Z71 Grizzly 09-21-2009, 09:44 PM I keep saying I'm going to do this, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Sometime here because the mirrors are getting kind of annoying shaking like they have been.
varty yo 09-22-2009, 11:45 AM my glass would shake lots at highway speens. had it at the dealer a few times for it they replaced the whole motor in behind, still shacky. so they they put some sticky weights on the back side and it seems to have helped
stump_breaker 09-22-2009, 12:49 PM The galss on mine shake as well.
Of course as much as I love the truck, I equally hate the mirrors, particularly the right side!
GMCz71 09-25-2009, 08:16 PM Mine do and they are brand new. I had them replaced by the dealer because one wouldn't extend and the other shook so bad it made me ill to look at. Not sure what can be done.
socal2ks 09-25-2009, 09:31 PM Just pulled 4000lbs from Kansas to colorado (montrose) to phoenix to ca and back to lake havasu then back to ca. Speeds from 55 to 75 mph with wind and no wind.
Guess what no shake! Until.... I unloaded....Food for thought.
I went crazy using isolating foam, clay, tape, rubber etc trying to fix the shake.
Who's shake with weight in the bed or while towing?
QuikSSilver 09-26-2009, 01:52 PM if you just do the fix i posted they will never shake again... regardless of weight speed wind weather !

Your mirrors arent the "Dumbo ear" tow mirrors right?
My stock mirrors never shook.
DougH614 09-26-2009, 08:09 PM socal has a good point, the fix is on the little mirrors. I look at most of your avatars, you all have little mirrors what about the big mirrors?
