: Cat removal concern
MXdiesel 05-14-2005, 03:48 PM How much of a concern is it to get caught without a cat since i live in california? Is it some thing to worry about. Do they ever look for things like this? I would like some opinions from you other guys who are running catless. thanks
mrmagu 05-14-2005, 05:40 PM I do not know of anyone having a problem, both our trucks are catless. I am sure somewhere down the line someone will check but I am not aware of any official attempt to do so...yet
GMC2500HD 05-14-2005, 05:53 PM IIRC there is a fine and I have heard in a few isolated incidents of some people I know out there having the vehicles confiscated, fixed, and they were charged for the work. Not sure though. No reason to chance it in my opinion. Good luck
nevrenufhp 05-14-2005, 11:39 PM I'd say those chances are dependant on the big black cloud of smoke out the tail pipe. From what I see, there's not much going to happen until '07. Just keep your kitty in the garage in case it becomes needed.

That's pretty much what I'm going to do. cap the ends and stick it in a corner. When '07 rolls around, you could pull the "it plugged" excuse... Might work. :confuzeld They DO plug. My grandfather's 97 Dodge Cummins plugged within two years. Not cool. Replacing plugged cats every few years would get EXPENSIVE.
mannytranny 05-15-2005, 12:00 AM I would advise against it. At least in CA, I think it is called "tampering with emissions devices" and subject to a large fine. Also I keep hearing that diesels will soon be required to go in for emissions tests like gassers.
Weve got bad enough air quality in So Calif.
I also think that the gains are pretty minimal, if anything at all.
LBZ DMAX 05-15-2005, 05:44 AM I have been 'cited' for having a K&N filter cone without the CARB # on it. It was actually a 'fix it' ticket. I had to make the necessary changes back to stock and take it down to the Beauru of Automotive Repair (BAR) and they smogged it and gave me a copy that it was ok. I then went back to the PD and they signed off on it. $50 later, I was off the hook. I believe under the hood 'emissions' related tamperings would probably be easier to catch. This is my experience, hope it helps.
McRat 05-15-2005, 12:02 PM Currently there is no smog check on Diesels in CA.
I've been running without a cat for almost 30k.

Liftedhdrado 05-24-2005, 03:23 PM So if they start that emissions in 2007 does that mean that the people that buy trucks starting in 2007 will have to go through that or does it mean anyone with a diesel from the previous yrs will also have to get a smog check?

I don't believe anyone has an absolute exact answer to that one.:confuzeld

From long term storage ....
If they start smoging at some point, all will have the honor and glory of getting smogged. However, they will only hold the earlier years to what was OEM on that year model. I had a '64 and when I had to have it smogged, the test was to test the PCV actually flowed. I got to pay full price for a really simple 2 minute test.

Mark_my_word 05-25-2005, 03:22 PM Ralph,
Why did they start nosing around under the hood? did they pull you over for something else first?

I forgot to mention that was in another vehicle I own, which is not a diesel. This happened approximately 4 years ago in Ontario:rolleyes: . You guys can only imagine what I was doing in Ontario late at night.;) Mark, did this clarify why they would look under the hood?
Towsaboat 05-25-2005, 04:48 PM We have emmissions testing in many counties here in utah, and they do look to see if you've got all the parts installed:( . Haven't had to take the diesel in for testing yet since I still haven't had it a year, but I'm afraid of removing the cat due to potential fines. I'll ask the question when the test comes due
MXdiesel 05-25-2005, 06:24 PM Ralph, what were u doing late at night in Ontario?? :muahaha:
