: Questions About Rear Brake Wear And Tie Rods
Max Owner 05-14-2005, 02:42 PM Hey all. I appologize about not searching for this info, for lack of time.....
My truck went through an "Out of province inspection" for licensing requirements.
Apparently, my rear brakes (disc) are about 70% worn. Fronts appear to be fine.
And my (inner?) tie rods are loose.
Truck has 109,000 KLMs (65,000 miles) on it. 265 tires. I remember a little about brakes being worn rather early, in some threads, but don't remember wether it was front, or rears.
Does this sound resonable? I wasn't around, when the truck was up on the hoist. Incidently the wife was the one who was present......... So I couldn't see what was going on. I am wondering if it was the typical mentallity of taking advantage of a woman, kind of thing?
Truck is a tow vehicle, but hasn't seen allot of it.
Max Power 05-14-2005, 02:47 PM Did the write down the measurements for the rear discs? Who did the inspection a GM dealer? Perhaps they didn't have the proper specs.
I assume it failed the inspection? The brakes should pass but I'm guessing the Tie Rods didn't?
Max Owner 05-15-2005, 02:45 PM Hey Tony.
It was a Canadian Tire. Went there because it was right beside the licensing bureau. Truck DID pass, but they told my wife, just barely. I was told the rear brakes were 70% worn. The inner tie rods were loose.
Before I get it fixed, I will get a second oppinion. If it needs dpoing, than so be it. Just want to know for sure.
In other threads, others had complained about brakes wearing out, very quickly. Was it the fronts or the rears? I use my e-brake fairly religiously.
Max Power 05-15-2005, 02:54 PM I'll bet they were exaggerating trying to get her to spend some money.
Max Owner 05-16-2005, 08:22 PM Once I start working, I will get a second opion. If any thing happens, before, through on the credit card.
sbarshie 05-20-2005, 11:33 AM I have 63k on mine and the rear brakes were shot. They were rusted real bad, only about 50% of the pad was touching the rotor on the inside of both rears. It failed inspection for a leaking real axle seal thats when they found it. The pads still were about 40% but the rotors were terrible.
My front end is real loose also, so your probably due for some work.
pm me if you want pics, I can't attach anything to this for some reason.
TC Dmax 05-20-2005, 12:35 PM Front and rear rotors/pads replaced at 60,000KM. Rotors were badly scored, rusted and pitted and at 72,000KM both front calipers had to be replaced. When the calipers were replaced I had a look at the rotors and they look lino better than the ones I took off 12K KM ago. Not happy with the OEM brake setup, looking to upgrade to something that is Heavy Duty.
If you were able to get over 100K Km out of a set I'd say you've done well.
Max Owner 05-20-2005, 01:19 PM Wish I had been around when it was on the hoist.
Not in a position to check for my self, right now....
My rear brakes were about 70% worn. Not a real issue, at the moment.
Tie rods on the other hand, I am conerned about. The roads around here are rough.
Max Payne 05-20-2005, 06:41 PM Inner tie rods do loosen up pretty regularly. I change alot of them. The rear brakes wear out on the right rear inside pad the fastest due to road spray hitting there. The left side is shielded by the fuel tank, so there is usually less wear on that side. BTW, the Canadian trucks are always the worst ones that I see.
Max Owner 05-22-2005, 09:37 PM Thanx Max Payne.
WillowCreekStable 05-23-2005, 05:26 PM Max - my truck has 110,000 km and 'grew up' in the same neighborhood as yours (live in Fotrt Erie, work in Stoney Creek). My last service at Queenston Chev came back with exactly the same deal - tierods and rear brakes........need attention 'soon'.
Max Owner 05-23-2005, 05:34 PM Willow Creek; Any more info?
Queenston is where mine went for the minor stuff.
Sean.
WillowCreekStable 05-24-2005, 09:14 AM Inside rear pads worn, rotors rusted and pitted. They didn't give percentages or indicate that I had a safety problem yet, just they will need attention soon. I'm assuming I'm good until the next service. They didn't give a repair estimate. I've been traveling and didn't personally take the truck in, I plan to take a look at it in my workshop when I get a chance, see how close they really are.
Its hard to tell if I have a front end problem over the clunking steering shaft, and its hard to believe that a truck driven 165 km a day can have a rusty rotor problem. The only time I've had brake rust problems is on vehicles that weren't regularly driven.
Did you get a repair estimate?
Max Owner 05-24-2005, 07:00 PM Yup.
I think it is in my filing system (passenger side floor) at the moment.......
$795, I think. Rear brakes (pads and rotars) and tie rods. From a Canadian Tire.
Will have to double check.
letsgo 05-24-2005, 09:31 PM At 75000km (45000mi) I figure I had less than 50% brake shoe contact due to surface rust on all 4 rotors.
drive safe.
Max Owner 05-25-2005, 07:04 PM Heres my quote......
Tie rod (inner) $196.80 both
Tie rod end X2 @$69.69 $139.38
Brake rotor replacement X2 $147.60
Monroe pad X1 $59.99
Rotors X2 $89.99 (per) $179.98
Alignment $74.99
Labour $419.39
Parts $379.35
Total including taxes $877.09
No PST out here, just GST.
Max Owner 05-25-2005, 07:06 PM P.S. The Shop Foreman and Service Manager at Queenston (both named Mike) I will miss. Both seemed to treat me well.
Max Power 05-25-2005, 07:07 PM Do it yourself and save $400 in labor and get an alignment after. Nothing difficult about either.
Max Power 05-25-2005, 07:08 PM I would also price out from a Gm dealer. You might be surprise and just how high priced Canadian tires are. I personally wouldn't take my bicycle to Canadian Tire to get it fixed.
Max Owner 05-25-2005, 07:44 PM Living in a camp ground, at the moment......
Will check with the local dealer, aswell. When the time comes.
Brakes I would consider tackling. Tie rods................? Should take a closer look at whats involved.
redfritz761 06-07-2005, 08:50 AM I stopped in at the dealer yesteday and asked about the inner tie rods wearing out but I couldn't get him to admit there was a problem with them. I didn't know they were loose till I took it in to have a wheel alignment. The truck I have is a 2001 2500HD duramax. The truck is greased and oil changed every 5000 miles and driven on good roads and I bought the truck new. As far as brakes go the biggest problem I see is rust and this is not only on the trucks. Rust is what tears up the brake pads. Rotors years ago didn't rust like they do today. I dont' know if they used to treat the rotors for rust or they are just made out of inferior iron. I doubt if they are even casted here anymore.
