Hey guys, just a quick question about the spin on filter. I have 33,000 miles on my 07 duramax and I'm going to change the spin on tomorrow for the first time. I was wondering what everyone thought about when to change the fluid?? I believe I was told 50,000 if I'm not towing all the time which I am not, just a lawn mower and a 21 foot ski boat every now and then. What does everyone think, should I change it now or wait?? THANKS!!!

The spin on is recommended I belive between 12 and 15k, however seems like most like more around 10 to 12k.
If you have never changed the fluid before, you probably still don't need to. But it wouldn't hurt. You can't change it to much.
If you do change it I would recommend one of Ally's fluids. TES-295 fluid.
Look on their web page for a local dealer. It's not cheap FYI.
But your trans will work so much better. You can also run the fluid longer, towing or not. I will add though, if you just change the spin on, and pull the plug on the pan, you will have to do it another 2 times (I think) recommended by Ally before you go to extended change intervals. Reason being you won't get all of it out.

Almost forgot.

They also have the specs for changing the fluid, and how many times before you can do an extended change interval.

If I just change the spin on now and decide to change the fluids later, does the spin on need to be changed again at the time of the fluid change lets say if its in the near future or will it be fine??

If you change the spin-on now there is no reason for you to have to change it again if you're gonna do a fluid change in the near future. There is no cross contamination or one having a direct effect on the other if that's what you're worried about. If you're gonna go another 10k before changing the fluid then you'll be due for a new spin on anyhow. Don't forget there should be a washer shaped magnet on top of the spin on when you remove it. Clean and transfer that magnet to your new filter. If there is no magnet pick one up from your Allison dealer when you're buying your Transynd tranny fluid.

The oem Ally filter sells for around $8.45 a piece, so it is very cheap insurance for the Allison, and piece of mind. Try changing it when the truck is cold, it is very easy. Don't forget the magnet that sits on top of the filter...

I'm changing mine on my first oil change and every other oil change because at $8 or $10 a piece isn't to much to pay for good maintenance.

Hi everyone. Juat a quick question... I just drained my tranny fluid and when I took the filter off to change it there was no magnet on the filter or stuck on the area where the filter goes. Do all Allison trannys in 2001 Chevy 3500 trucks have a magnet?
Thanks

Are you asking them for a spin on or the pan filter? The pan filter IS around 40 bucks at allison.

Go to the Allison website and search for a local dealer. Many large truck repair shops are an Allison dealer.

Spin on filters just cost me 8 something a piece, plus I got a new magnet for my missing one for 3 dollars.

If you cant find a local dealer, some vendors and Merchant Automotice sell them for like 10-15 dollars.

Dealers want 44 to 47 for the Allison. Allison trans shop near me sells them for $9. Eric Merchant (a good vendor on here) sells for about $11. I usually buy from him for supporting us.

same here i called a local ally dealer as well and he had the same price, why is there such a big difference between the dealers (40 something) and the vendors on here? i can get 6 filters delivered for 20 bucks more then the cost of one at the stealership, how does that work out? are they the same filters?

If you get allison they have the same part # on the box as the dealer. I bought one from a dealer in a pinch for only $47. I bitched to them-but they wouldn't budge. A few weeks later the dealer called and wanted me to come in for service. I told them no way could I afford their parts prices. They gave me a bunch of grief about not being trained to do my own work.

If you order from Merchant Auto you don't have to drive anywhere to get them. You will get them in the mail and save fuel and wear and tear on your truck...
