Does anybody know if part # 15287356 is the correct part number I need to replace my Dad's instrument cluster in his '04 2500HD? I know it is the part number for the instrument cluster itself....but I guess what I'm asking is, will this be the gauges and all? His speedometer does not work at all, and hasn't for a while, but its a $400 plus fix at the stealership. So if this is the correct part, I was going to order the instrument cluster for him and we put it in.

Which by the way....has anybody ever replaced the instrument cluster themselves? How hard is it? What all is involved?

I took the instrument cluster out of my 2000 Camaro SS back a few years ago to put in white face gauges, but can't remember how all I did it. I'm sure it would come with directions, but experience from here is always better.

Thanks.

First, they're not very hard to repair. Read this DIY http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=140580&highlight=speedometer

2ndly, the cluster will need correctly flashed, either by the seller or your dealer. And I don't just mean for the odometer. Parameters such as wait to start, etc. can be programmed in or out, dependent upon the application. The first few failed units of mine were exchanged by my dealer through GM's program. Not one came back right (some lasted a day or two before more problems).

Another option is to send the cluster to a speedo repair place-- some are listed in eBay. Costs a lot less and they will replace ALL the stepper motors with the new units. :D

If it's under 70,000 miles (or so, some have had success at 100k miles), then there is a free fix from GM. Or at least there was, and I assume it's still valid.

If you can replace a cluster (you've done it before), and you can solder with a small iron (not a soldering gun), then you can replace the stepper motors yourself. Use the link posted above by heymccall. I think I paid about $70 for all 7 of them a couple of years ago, and I think others have paid even less.

I think replacing them yourself is the best option, followed by paying someone to replace the motors (if you can't solder), followed by sending it out for repair, but where you get yours back. In other words, I recommend fixing your cluster.

If you use the free GM replacement program (assuming it still exists), you'll get an exchange (someone else's used cluster). Be sure they put in the same kind !! (at least 1 person realized they gave him one without a transmission temp gauge). Some people had great experiences with this program, and for some it took many retries by the dealer to get it right.

Thanks for the replies fella's. I've got a guy from about 20 minutes down the road that emailed me about this last night. He fixes this very problem for local dealerships on the side. Said he would take out the cluster and replace/repair everything for $110. Probably going to give him a call today.

Thanks again.
