i just recently bought a 2000 3500HD dump truck for with a 6.5. Has 40,000 miles. got a really good deal on it... However, it has some issues. the thing leaks oil like crazy. it also willl just randomly die on me from time to time and i will start it back up and it will die shortly after. sometimes wont start back up untill it sits for awhile.... and sometimes it will start but dies shorty after. starts like a champ when its cold and runs good most of the time. please point me in a direction i know nothing bout the 6.5.

thanks

the stalling and hard starting sounds like a PMD issue.

Check the FAQs section in my signature and take a look at the PMD information.

The oil leaks. common leaks are front and rear main seals(new CDR valve should help) and the oil cooler lines. The factory oil cooler lines are junk. Your best replacements would be the Lube Specialists stainless braided oil cooler line kit. That can be found here.

how much money are we talking to fix the pmd and the oil leaks (in parts) and how much of a PITA is it.

could be a lift pump if you have to let sit for a while thats what mine is doing......

Special policy on the pump is 7yrs/120k miles so you are on your own.

You need to confirm OPS/Lift pump operation and then you need to get on the phone to Kennedy or Heath and get a remote PMD setup.....

got the truck back a couple weeks... they just did the pmd and a reroute under warranty. Took to truck to a job towing my skidsteer and it died on me again. so my questions are 1. what else could it be... Injection Pump? 2. When it died i lost trailer breaks like someone just turned the key off.... An electrical problem? Please help.

Thanks

hey guys...

had the same probs on my '96...

it took me about 1yr to find out what cause this prob...

i checked the grounds, the connectors, FP, gas cap and few more things...even thought it is the injection pump...
BUT there is no reason for work on time and not the other...

i found out it only could be this PMD...i got a new one and extend the wiring (you need some electronic and soldering knowledge)
and the major thing you need to relocate the PMD cause it get a way to hot between the V8...

i relocated the PMD under the hood infront of the fuse box (brecked on the inner wheel house) put also a FSD Cooler on...

also two litte computer fans on top of the cooler (ign. controlled with a shut down delay for the fans)...

since than...no more probs with that PMD...

hope it was a little helpful...

cheers chevy_rulez :)

Have you checked the OPS? I had an issue with my truck (95) dying and not wanting to start back up but would eventually start. What I did was one of those times when it wouldn't start I got under the hood and pulled the lift pump relay and put a jumper in to bypass the OPS and force the lift pump to run. The truck started and ran fine, replaced the OPS and problem was solved.
