Call Thum Insurance, (800) 866-0777. I have been with them for several years, on my RV and 4500. Just added a Kenworth tractor that is not commercial. Very good rates, and good service.

I found a much cheaper provider for medium duty insurance. It all started with a survey call from our Missouri Farm Bureau. I hadn't considered them as an option, thought you had to be in the farm industry to apply. Not so. So, that got me to thinking, farmers drive big trucks, wonder what they're rates are. End result is I had progressive (luckily for barely a month so I'm getting back nearly my full premium) my rate with progressive was $1254 annually and with the suspected mileage restriction even though my local agent said there was none, now I'm with the Mo Farm Bureau and my annual rate is $500. My new FB agent said he can only write policies to Mo residents, however if any of you have a farm bureau in you state, you can seek the same coverage since they all follow the same policy guidelines.

When I called I stated my argument that the insurance companies are helping to promote overloaded vehicles by ripping us off just because we chose to haul with the appropirate truck. He agreed and said he'd go to bat for me. When he called back he said the issue had already been addressed, MFB had wrote many policies already for just such an occasion. It's a commercial policy BUT, with a stipulation that I'm not for hire, haul my own goods or livestock, and no mileage restrictions....none.

Kinda a long post but thought I'd pass on some helpful information.

Great post,
I was considering upgrading my 2500HD right pass a dually to a used 4500, and was wondering about insurance cost of the up grade. Knowing this will help in the "can I really afored to own one". Right now my 2500 cost me over $650.00 a year and that's with 3 vehicles on the policy.

Wow! $500 on a commercial policy? Really? I have a commercial policy but don't use it for towing and hauling anything commercial. I'm paying about $2,500/year. There is some kind of farm insurance in my area, I'm calling them Monday first thing. What the heck. My car insurance is more than that and no, I have NO tickets and NO accidents in over 5 years! I had tried shopping my ins but got no where with it before.

It definetely pays to shop around for insurance on these trucks. When I first brought mine home, my policy with Nationwide wanted $4800 a year, I said NOT..... went to progressive for a year @ $1800 a year. Then found Travelers for $687 a year.....

Actually transferred everything over to Travelers for even bigger savings, but have not had to make a claim yet, so cant speak to how they are in that respect, but I have been happy with them otherwise.
