All,
I am looking for an inexpensive remote start system. I saw many recommendations for VIPER, but no-one listed model numbers. Looking at Viper's website I didn't see anything that tells me whether each remote started would work with diesels and the wait time necessary for cold starts. I don't want to buy something that will not fit my needs. What do you recommend, and model numbers.

Many autopart stores sell basic remote start systems. Usually have to buy the additional security module to bypass the Passlock II security on GMT-800 platform.

edit: forgot the wait to start deal. have to look around.

Most have the setup for diesel. I don't reccommend cheap Remote Starts, but if you are going to get a Viper or something, I would seriously consider the whole alarm. The cost difference is usually minimal, $100 to $150 difference. But some of the features that are in some of the alarm packages can make it worth it to have it.

I've known several people to buy the cheap models, and they are cheap but a pain in the a$$ to install usually because they do not come with the adapters for your vehicle, then by the time you buy the adapters, you have spent more money then getting one installed.

However, I have seen several alarms/remote starts installed by "Professionals" and most of them just splice into the wiring and you end up with a spagetti under the dash board. I've yet to find a dealer that will install a system the way I want it installed.

Megaboz is correct. Buying a cheap starter gets you a cheap starter. No range and crap warranty. I use Astrostart but Viper is also a good product. You could also look at installing it yourself. Your truck is one of the easy ones.

Hey Megaboz, most dealers I have dealt with don't know the difference between an air cleaner and a r/s system, therefore their installs are usually spaghetti like. Most "true remote pro's" do installs that are soldered, bulletproof and only a trained pro would recognize that there is even one installed.
