Made a bracket for the second alternator position, used a Wix filter head (same as Permacool) Wix filter 33528, 1/2" fuel hose to OEM filter, I took the inlet hose off the OEM tube, put a splice in and attached one hose, the other hose loops around and attaches to the tube on the OE filter head. I did not use any type of sealant on the fittings (should've used teflon liquid right?) I put an O ring on around the threads of the Wix filter head (I read to do that on here.) Still bleeding air bad. Last night I was reading a thread and I don't know for sure if no matter what I do it'll stop the air bleeding without a lift pump.

I guess my question is: what do I need to do to make this work? I don't have the lift pump yet. Do I have to wait for the lift pump before this will work flawlessly? Or do I need to seal all connections, re-check o'rings/seals, add a bleeder or primer to the wix head, basically keep messing with it till it works?

:help:

never had a problem with mine. i would get a pump or put some pressure on it if you can. then watch to see where the fluid it leaking from. make sure all your fittings are tight. i used teflon tape and havent had and ounce of trouble, ofcourse after i retightened a couple of fittings.

Thanks for the info. In the process of putting teflon on the fittings the other day I broke the filter head. Yeah, I was putting them in tight. So I got mad and took it all off and put it back to stock for now until I get a lift pump.

One stupid question though: if the "free air" causes the filters to be only half full when you replace them - what would happen if the filter head was installed upside down? The air would not be even close to the in/out lines to suck air. But I suppose the whole filter would be air since there'd be no way to get it out, right?

i was told that some semi trucks are installed upside down so that there is no way the fuel can get dirty installing it. im sure it will make a mess when you have to change it though

i know CAT runs some that way. they do it to prevent people from pre-filling the filter..

I used a CAT head and after about a year and a half I put an o-ring on the threaded pin and never have had a problem since. Your filter head should work just fine, also.

My filters are dirty most the way to the top at replacement time. Your original problem is a leak. Period. Connections, splices or fittings. Not to take away from anyone that has the lift pump, but if you have all the leaks fixed, and stay at the second alternator position, your system will work without the lift pump. Too many of us have that configuration and are successfull.

i agree mitchagain, i hardly ever have my pumps on. never really have any bursting isssues unless i stay in it for a while when my low boost is all the way up.

Thanks again for the info. I just got my replacement filter head today. Maybe I'll try it again before I scrap the idea. I still plan on getting a lift pump, just waiting for the $ and for Kennedy's setup to be completed.

i used the permacool head and mounted it on the frame rail under the bed and i have had zero problems. i use the long cat filter without any special o-ring and i used liquid pipe sealant on the nipples. it seems like most people that put the filter under the hood have had problems with keeping out air.
