: Showing off the shop
nassdmax 05-13-2005, 01:53 AM I think I figured out the intent of this forum?????
Built last year... 30x48x14high. Wish it was bigger, but it was as big as the township would let me go.
100amps power, natural gas line, water, phone, cable, airline back to house... Did the concrete floor last year, outfitting the inside this year.
Where do you all turn your wrenches?
sp33d 05-13-2005, 01:57 AM I've stuck this thread. Let's see picks of shops/garages inside and out!
CStone 05-14-2005, 01:50 AM nassdmax
Nice shop. I'm looking at building something similar in size on the farm. PM me with the cost for the structure (sans floor and utilities), if you don't mind. I'm shopping around different steel building manufacturers and am amazed at the range in pricing.
Slide 05-19-2005, 10:10 AM I do all my wrenching in the driveway, no shop as of yet. Wanting to do something similar to my father-in-law's place. He build a 40x100 steel building then built a 1600 sq ft apartment on one side. Really nice and the way the apartment is tied into the steel building frame it is very solid. He walks out the side door into his 40x60 shop. He has a car, pickup, motorcycle, 28 ft travel travel trailer and riding lawnmower in there and still has tons of space.
sierradmax 05-23-2005, 11:58 AM here's what I have been building in the spare time for the past 2 years. it's just about finished. 100 amp service, all 20 amp recepticals, (6) 8' flourescent lamps 30'x36' with no columns and 12'x36' second floor. 10'ceilings. I still have to add the baseboard, make some benches and cabinets and of course clean it up pretty good. Upstairs will be my office space with a spare bed, couch, bar etc.(mantown). Equipped with wireless internet, phone line, water, and a fax. I even ran air hose through the walls from one side of the room to the other so there is no need to drag 330 of air hose.
It's equipped with a 30 amp welder and I just recently purchased 2 craftsman too cabinets..Now I just need to purchase more tools.
heres an image about a year ago (with a PSD and a 32' horse trailer)

here's the webiste with more pics (http://www.rpi.edu/~crookj/garage/)
sierradmax 05-23-2005, 12:00 PM fogot to mention, I just started building an enclosed 5'x8' addition to the left side of the building for a 100 gallon oil tank which i intend to fill with diesel. I can't wait for that bill every month :(
Dmax Tim 06-02-2005, 08:45 AM Here's the outside of mine, 40X54
full of tools and junk for the new master bathroom I got to put in.
Oldman 06-07-2005, 03:31 PM No pics right now, but mine was started last fall. 30x40, metal sides and roof. 15 ft ceiling. One 12x12 door centered on one of the 30ft ends. In-floor heat, plumbing ruoghed in for deep sink, toilet, and shower. Boiler for in-floor also supplies hot water for the sink and will also be supplying and overhead blower for recovery when the door is opened. Air compressor is in but not yet plumbed through out. 100 amp electric also with most breakers at 20 amps. I do have one 50 amp for my welder, Lincoln Power Mig 255. A loft will go in over 1/4, maybe 1/2 of the area. Phone and wireless internet are in. Building a 20x12 shed next to it for seasonal storage.
2fast2 09-08-2005, 10:36 AM He is my first ever attempt at attatching a picture. Notice the beauty in the foreground :D
This is a 48x60x14 Morton with 200 amp electrical service, 6 inch fiberglass reinforced concrete floor, sliding doors on both ends for light and air flow as well as ingress/egress. No heat or AC, no running water inside (notice the frost-free hose bib outside the entry door) because I was trying to put my available funds into the biggest building I could justify, knowing I could always upgrade later. There are three sliding windows on the side you see, and two on the opposite side facing those tall pines. There are four skylites in the other half of the roof, which you can't see from my house, but they do a great job with natural light. I get lots of compliments on the building, and I'm very satisfied with it so far. The only thing I've needed to do is slightly adjust the sliding doors, for the first time just yesterday.
JPW77 09-13-2005, 05:58 PM 2fast2,
Would you mind sharing how much your building cost you? I'm currently buying some acreage and will eventually build a house on it, but in the meantime I would like to put some kind of building there that would be half apartment and half garage area and I really like the look of the Morton buildings. I would like to do this for under $20K, but still have a decent size living area and shop area.
2fast2 09-14-2005, 05:38 PM Well, my shop was more than $20K, but you wouldn't necessarily want to build exactly what I did, anyway. Plus, construction prices have really shot up since I build 2 years ago this November.
I suggest contacting Morton and meet with a sales person. They will give you a quote based on exactly what YOU want, using current prices. I think winter is the cheapest time for you to build, being in Georgia. And don't forget to search their web site for "internet specials" and "sales." I built mine during their anniversary and got a few little upgrades for no additional charge. Every little bit helps!
And don't forget real costs include building permits, site preparation, concrete and electrical work, etc. Even if you do some of this yourself, material costs add up!
Good luck, and I hope you can build your dream shop.
Jim
JPW77 09-15-2005, 06:17 PM Thank you for the reply. I'm probably still a couple of years away from doing anything yet anyway, but your shop caught my attention and is very similar as to what I had in mind. I was just wanting to get a price idea to know how to start budgeting for it now. I guess I better start adding a little bit more to the pot than I anticipated! It will also be built in south Alabama but I'm sure what you said about building in the winter would hold true there as well. Thank you again for the information and compliments on your shop!
CADman_ks 09-28-2005, 12:47 AM ....
This is a 48x60x14 Morton with 200 amp electrical service, 6 inch fiberglass reinforced concrete floor ....
2fast2,
What's the color scheme on your building? Ivory and Red, or White and Red (all Morton colors).
CADman_ks
PS: Nice looking building. Mine's going to be very similar, but no cupula. Nobody would ever see it. :)
2fast2 09-28-2005, 09:46 AM Thanks.
The light color is ivory, definately not white because there is some white for the windows and the entry door and I was concerned it would look strange with ivory next to white. It doesn't. It looks fine to me, and my more color conscious wife.
I just pulled out my paperwork on the building. Ivory and red, Kynar paint for all.
48x60x12. Interesting, because it actually is higher since they use raised cord trusses. The sliding doors on each end are 21 x 12ft 6in aluma-steel. I have 5 windows which are 4 x 2, with louvered red shutters, and four, 3 x 6ft 5in white fiberglass skylights on the east side only. Endwall overhand is 2ft, sidewall overhang width is 1 ft, vented.
They called the basic building a "machine shed, class no. 100."
Don't know if any of that is helpful to you, but since I'm looking at the order, it was pretty easy to provide.
After these hurricaines, I can't imagine what is happening to construction material costs, but I sure am glad we built our building two years ago.
Jim
CADman_ks 09-28-2005, 10:04 AM Jim,
Thanks for the information. That's very helpful. The building that I ordered is 42 x 72 x 14. Currently we've spec'ed it out with Mahogany and Biege. There's a building almost the exact same size as mine about 3 miles from us, and we really like the mahogany/beige color combo. However, we're debating wheter we would like Ivory and Mahogany better, since the siding our house is more of the ivory color.
As for prices, I think that they are acutally down a little from where they were a couple of years ago when I checked, BUT Morton seems to be more aggressive/competitive in their pricing right now, or so it seems. I don't know if the prices are actually down, or if you don't have to beat them up to get the "best" price anymore. However, I'm pretty sure that prices will be going up soon because of the hurricanes, and my adviser was pretty sure that they would be as well.
Morton has so many buildings to put up in this area right now, that I can't even get my building put up until March/April time frame '06. That really works good for me because I need to clear the land where it's going anyways...
Thanks again for the info...
Darrin
2fast2 09-28-2005, 10:18 AM The one bit of advice I would offer is to get your site ready well in advance, and let your sales person know it is ready and waiting. The sales person here had to come out and inspect the site before they would ship the order (you can understand they can't take a chance driving to a site where they can't offload. The losses would be tremendous.) For me, I got moved up several weeks because my site was ready and waiting, and other people were not ready as they should've been. So my job jumped ahead in line. If you want, you can let your sales person know you want ASAP and notify them when the site is ready, and you too might end up with your building sooner than you think!
Jim
PS I like the ivory idea better. (Maybe you can set up a poll and we can all vote!)
Drywall1 11-08-2005, 09:41 PM Here's my shop on the 75 acres we bought a couple a years ago. The shop is now much further along (pic was taken in early spring) It's 40x70 with a 14x14 office/ kitchenette and a 5x10 bathroom:ro) Worst part was the 330ft well and septic system we had to put in 15k right there. Will get some better pics soon.
2fast2 11-08-2005, 10:11 PM Are you using it as living quarters while you build a house? Investing that money in the well and septic makes me think this isn't an ordinary work space.
CADman_ks 11-08-2005, 10:15 PM That's a GORGEOUS building!!! :ro)
That's basically the same size building that I'm going to build, but my side walls are going to be 14' tall, and mine will be tin sided (Morton building)
I wonder where you found someone to do ALL that drywall for you ??? ):h
CADman_ks
Drywall1 11-09-2005, 09:05 PM Thanks for the kind words guys! Yes eventually we will be building a house near the shop, but will have to have another septic tank put in for the house. I stoppped keeping track of the money it cost when the 50k loan I got was gone before I even insulated it. But now all that is left is to build the work benches and get some furniture in the office area. Im anxious to see how the insulation does this winter. I did the icenyne foam in the walls and ceiling. As far as the drywall goes that was a lot of ceiling to texture. It took almost 50 gallons of drywall mud. I will have this shop forever so I kinda got a little crazy. Like the in ceiling speaker system and the custom cabinets but oh well. Even had a neighbor call today and ask if he could rent it out for his daughters college graduation party in December. Funny stuff! I'll try to get some new pics in the next week.
bowtie 01-09-2006, 03:41 PM Here's the one I just had built a few months ago. 30X50X10 with 3 over head doors. Inside not finished yet but it was plumbed for a full bathroom and office area at one end. Total building cost 16,500.00 and I will be finishing the insides and adding electric service
Drywall1 01-12-2006, 08:27 PM Couple latest pics of the shop and the latest addition to the business...I know I cant belive I bought a Dodge either but $$ was to good to pass up:ro)
Nate
farmer0_1 02-07-2006, 02:32 AM here is a couple of pics of our farm shop. built in 1978 it has had a chance to fill in from the walls alittle. heated with a homebuilt used oil stove. nothing fancy but I don't worry about getting it dirty. 24 wide and 36 long 11ft tall only couple things I would do different and that is a door to drive out of on far end of shop for towing in rigs that do not run. we insulated the purlins and now I would put a ceiling in it to keep the heat down lower. and paint it a white color inside for lite.
CADman_ks 03-04-2006, 03:00 PM Morton started on my building on Thursday (March 2, 06). They say that they'll be done on Tuesday or Wednesday of the coming week. 5 DAYS!!
Bad thing is, I'll be out of town when they get it complete. Oh well.
Here's the final details:
42' x 72' x 14' walls
1 - 20' x 14' sliding door
1 - 10' x 10' roll-up door
1 - 36" walkdoor, w/ 10' wide porch
Burgandy trim, beige main color.
No floor. We'll do that after they're finished in hopefully a month or so.
Here's a few pics of where it's at right now. For the full rundown, go to:

2fast2 03-04-2006, 07:32 PM AWESOME!
I'm glad you took all those pictures because I missed a lot of the construction process when they built mine a couple years ago. I was busy working (sort of a priority since that's how I paid for it anyway...) and it was really great to see their process documented in your pictures. I must admit, however, I wasn't thrilled with the title to your slide show.
"SHED" ??? Uhmmm, where I come from, you wouldn't call a 42 by 72 building a "shed". Can't you come up with a name for the building a little more high-class? ):h
Keep taking those pictures so I can watch the rest of the process. And, congratulations on being a Morton "SHOP" owner. Very well constructed with attention to detail I haven't seen in most buildings.
My wife wants to build a Morton garage next to our house, just because they show up, get to work, and finish like they promise. :grd:
I wish the local builders were anything like that.
Jim
CADman_ks 03-05-2006, 12:13 AM LOL!!! I'll come up with a better name than shed!!! That's basically what we call anything out here that's NOT a barn, which is something that you keep animals in. Outbuilding is another popular one. Some people do call it a shop as well. I call both things, and use them interchangably.
I am lucky that my job affords me the luxury of being able to take these pictures. However, all of them have been taken early in the morning, before we leave, at lunch, and after we come home from work. The most that I've taken off for the whole project so far, was when they unloaded the truck. Morton wants someone there if at all possible, and so I just stayed and watched then too.
As for the continued picture taking, I'm going to have to rely on my wife. I'll be gone next week when they finish. I'll leave her with pretty explicit instructions on what she's supposed to photograph...
Darrin

6" batt insulation in walls, 18" of blown in insulation in ceiling.
12'x64' loft above office, bathroom, and work bench with stairs at the end.Runs the whole length of the south wall.
30'x16' roll up door on west end for shop(with a nice dent from 4-wheeler, dad about killed me after that one!!)
32'x17' sliding doors on south side for machine storage.
Shop is pretty much complete, still moving things over from old shed. Office not done, hopefully this winter.
TheBac 05-27-2006, 11:49 PM Now that's a shop! Where's the basketball court?
akdiesel 05-28-2006, 01:50 AM That is a nice idea with the rebar as protection for future ideas.
Very nice shop.
GMdmxdsl 05-28-2006, 05:48 PM Thanks! The basketball hoop is in the corner! My dad sells seed corn and seed beans so the shop is pretty nice storage and the old forklift really likes it on the new concrete.

hdroadkingc 01-31-2007, 10:26 PM Its a Hansen pole building. (www.hansenpolebuildings.com). I paid around $15000.00 for the kit. That is for everthing but concrete. That was about two years ago. I know the price of steel has gone up since then. They will give you a free quote on their web site.
hemisareslow 02-01-2007, 01:53 AM Thanks..
akdiesel 02-04-2007, 12:33 AM Well I finally got my shop back from the guy that built it. He was staying there untill he built his house. I have been slowly putting things in its place.
It has a full bath, kitchen and a one room just incase the wife puts me in the dog house.
The only thing I wish it had was two 12' doors insted of the two 10' doors. I can not get a motorhome in there. It has a custom made 26' header so I don't think I can modify it.
The builder used to park his Supercub in there. With both doors open the middle piece will unlock and lift up on a hinge to allow for a 25' opening.
2fast2 02-04-2007, 09:37 AM WOW. You have a beautiful shop!
The thread is "Showing off the shop" and you really have something to show off. I hope your builder gave you one heck of a break considering he lived there, because I wouldn't want to write the check for all that nice finish work for a workshop. Is that all drywall? It looks as nice as my house!
farmer0_1 02-04-2007, 09:56 AM man those are some pretty shops you guys have. have to clean mine out and paint it. then in two years i will have it all cluttered up again. just me.

Thanks. He has a sheetrock buisness. I got the SHOP and the house as a package deal and for a great price. The shop was definatly the deciding factor. It is fully sheetrocked. He had the floor painted ,before any of the cabinets went in, with some industrial product. He told me the name but I cant remember what it is. Nice stuff though.

Nice shop. I would llike to get mine finished inside one day. I have heat and air the high output lights, Rotory 9000 lb lift, insulation and some welders and plasma cutter but the loft and the finished walls would be great. Often thought of the loft for sure for some extra storage. I really like your lath too. Been looking around for one.

Don't have good pics of it.
Have another that is bigger except with 2 doors.
farmer0_1 01-09-2008, 11:37 PM nice stuff you guys . my wife wants to know how come most these shops are nicer than our old farm house. they gotta be warmer.
2fast2 01-10-2008, 10:45 AM Don't worry, its not warmer than mine. Mine is a Morton without insulation. Usually within a few degrees of outside, little cooler in the summer (when opened up) and a little warmer in the winter. It was going to be another $7 for the insulation package and I just couldn't justify the expense.

It can't get done fast enough!!!
mvnvltn 02-17-2008, 11:24 PM Beginning to now.

2fast2 02-18-2008, 11:38 AM Looks like Morton's style for posts. Is it a Morton?
mvnvltn 02-18-2008, 12:06 PM No its not a morton. They are way overpriced.
littelbear 03-17-2008, 07:42 PM I am jealous nonetheless since all I have is my 3 car garage. I need to win the lottery and I would have a garage/shop to match the house.
gee-o 06-15-2008, 09:26 AM Center bay is 40' deep w/a 12'6" door, end bays are 32' deep w/8' doors.

Durallymax 06-18-2008, 12:50 AM Our shop is kinda sorta done. It just needs to be filled up.
A few quick specs.
60x80 Morton, Burgundy/White like all the other buildings. We alos wanted this one to look nice so we spent a little axtra adding the shudders, 2' overhang, and whatever you call it when the bottom 3' of the wall is covered in the same color trim as the roof.
The roof is 16' and peaks at 20' inside height.
All of the interior walls and celing are covered with acoustisteel, the bottom eight feet of the walls are covered with 3/4" sealed plywood so we can easily add tool hangers.
Two walk in doors w/windows
A doggie door between a walkin and the 24'
24x16 ovehead w/windows
12x14 overhead w/windows
10x14 overhead
Theres also 7 other windows in the shop,
There are 37 lights with 6 bulbs each for a total of 222 4" flourescent bulbs. Its bright.
Outlet boxes are 5" apart around entire shop and each have 4 plug ins for a total of 140 plug ins for 110v
There are 2 220v plug ins for the new welder (millermatic 252)
The floor is 6" thick with floor heat and the shop floor finish of course.
There is a 40' wide drain about 10' from the front two overhead doors.
There is a bathroom with shower, and an office going in when the local guy has time.
The loft is in a corner and extends 30' on the back(N) wall and 30' on the west wall. It extends out 12' and the steps are in the corner to save space. The railings have gates that open for setting big things up there. The loft sits above the office, bathroom, utilities and a few feet of workbench. Its filled with tons of parts shelves, which are empty right now.
The air conditioning unit is going in this week hopefully.
The carlift was just installed yesterday. It is a new Rotary S10i.
The air lines are what we are currently working on plumbing in.
Thats all I can think of for now, Ill get some pics some time.
rgullett83 06-19-2008, 05:53 PM Mine is not near as nice as some others that have been posted, and I am kind of jealous some day I will something big and nice.

shyster7 01-10-2009, 08:27 PM Wish i had a shop to show off, only a garage for now.
Miniracer 01-16-2009, 02:13 PM Mine is just a leased building, as I am not in a position to buy at the moment. 45'x27.5' with a 16' ceiling and 10'x12' door, and a 20'x11' office area that I split in half with a temporary wall for a comfortable hangout area.
All the toys fit inside, including the Dually and trailer! and I still have a place to tinker with the cars.
From the outside pics, in the center of where the windows are, there is a wall seperating the units.
New waste oil heater at my shop.
