: Which truck would you guys buy?

I posted this on another board but I figured I would put it here too to get as much feedback as possible ASAP.

I am looking at trading in my '03 Duramax Extended Cab for a crew cab. I am looking at 2 trucks. One is an '06 with about 50,000 miles on it and has all the trimmings. It's a 4x4 LT with sunroof and DVD player, heated seats, etc. They want $30,000 for it. The other is an '08 leftover 4x2 CC LS package with nothing special in it. It has 20 miles on it and that is also $30,000.
I am going to use the truck primarily for towing my car trailer and we don't get a lot of snow here in SE Pa. anymore. I think I used my '03 twice last winter in 4wd. The only time I can see it helping is if I park in the wet grass or pit area somewhere and have trouble pulling out.
I am leaning toward the '06 because of the LT package. I know my truck rides hard and bounces a lot when I am towing and not sure if the '08 suspension is any better. I am guessing the '06 has the same suspension as my current ride.
What would you guys do?

2006 for sure but I think $30K is a bit high with 50,000 miles.
I just got a 2006 Dually 4x4 fully loaded with 11,300 miles for $28K
I also just sold a 2006 2500HD 4X4 ext cab with 20,000 miles for $26K

No question for me, the '06.

I would go for the 06, but I like having a 4x4 myself. The price does seem a bit on the high side. I would think somewhere around 20 K would be about right.

Get the 4x4. Better to be safe than sorry. At 50,000 miles it's hardle broken in.

So far you guys are telling me what I figured I would hear. I have been pricing them up here and $25K doesn't get you too much. I looked at an '04 the other night that had around 60,000 miles on it and they wanted $25k for that and it looked like it was on an episode of pimp my ride. It also had a slight amount of body damage in front of the passengers rear wheel that I noticed as soon as they drove it around front. I think the big reason the price is so high on this one is that it has all the bells and whistles.

No one is buying new and even at the auctions around here the prices are high.

Another vote on the '06, 4x4 loaded = better resale value (as you can see), bonus if it has the LBZ. 30K sounds a bit high, yes...tell them you'll buy it RIGHT NOW, TODAY for the right number, most dealers are used to tire kickers but don't want to loose a serious buyer, esp in this economy. Remember for every $1000 financed, it's about $20 per month. If you get within 1-2K on the price and really want this truck, how hard is it to find an extra $20-40 a month? People waste that on fast food, cd's, other crap you can cut down on. I used to sell cars, can ya tell? ha ha.

06 IMO also, better fuel milage and 4X4 to boot. You need to bargain that price down though, $30k is too much money. Offer them $24k and work from there.

They actually had the truck at $31,000 initially and took a grand off it. They offerred me the most out of all the dealers for my truck, $15,800, but I know how that works with the overallowance. My truck is really clean and would like to pull another grand or so out of it but I haven't had any bites on it.
I told them I wanted a factory DVD put in it and they said they would do that for $400 which I didn't think was too bad. I don't really think I will get them down much more because around here the dealers can't seem to keep them on the lots for some reason. I will give it a shot though on Monday when I go back to look at it after their detail guy is done with it.

Offer them $28K and then walk if they say no.
Tell them you have a few other to look at before you can go any higher.
My guess is they will not let you walk to far.

Neither for that money

I'd expand my search area. I've purchased several trucks (different makes) at significantly less than I could buy them for locally in the Dallas, TX area, even including the cost of catching a flight into Dallas & driving back home.

While that location may not work for you, check around - go to an area that moves a LOT of trucks so that it is very competitive to get the best price.

I've done this twice now & haven't had problems either time.

My suggestion, FWIW

An insurance company just bought my totalled 06 SB CC for 31K but that was after some serious complaining!

I'd be on the fence with this one. Sure one has 4wd, one doesn't. Like the OP said though he's used it twice in the past year and if you're not off road regularly or somewhat occaisonally, then why bother. However, an LMM brings its own issues to the table. Most notably the LMMs have a good ol DPF and that regen that sucks the crap out of your mileage. But if your DPF happens to fall off right after you take regen out with EFI then you don't have to worry about it. There is a thread in the LMM section with the OP of that thread having 200K miles on his LMM already. So they're both good trucks, just which one works for what you want.

If it helps I just bought a 07 2500 classic lbz crewcab 4x4 long bed with 68,000 miles in anson, tx for 22,350

Here is a link to one of my local dealer used trucks and the others are priced similarly.
http://www.keimchevy.com/used-inventory/index.htm?reset=InventoryListing#invHistory:reset= InventoryListing&inventoryView=fullview&invtype=used&SByear=clear&SBmake=Chevrolet&SBmodel=Silverado%202500HD&SBbodystyle=clear&certified=clear&carFaxPreviousOwners=clear&start=0

Part of the problem is with my financing, either through Capital One or Bank of America, they tell you what dealers are authorized to buy from. It has to be a "franchise" dealer and not a private or generic used car dealer and Chevrolet with their bankruptcy stuff is questionable.

What is the book price on both trucks 30,000 seems way to high to me. see what book price is and go from there.

Hey, if you want to pay full retail go pay full retail.
Dealers love people like you.
People are trying to educate you on saving a few bucks but some people just don't get it and those are the people that the dealers love.
Oh, by the way the dealers hate me and I'm OK with that.

I'm all for saving a few bucks and I really don't NEED the truck. The kid can just endure his feet rubbing the back of his mother's seat for a while. I was showing the NADA pricing because it seems like you guys think the truck is worth a lot less. I know the game and how it's played and I am actually planning on doing what you and RayK mentioned and tell them I will pay 28k and that's it and see what happens. My guess is that they will actually let me walk with the way the market is up here. We'll see.

definately the 06... IMHO if you buy the 2 wheel peel, you are gonna run into an instance where you want the 4x4 and kick yerself in the head!

Let them stick that truck up their butt. No way, no how that is priced correctly KBB or not. So ok maybe the LBZ's are a little desirable but $24K and that is it. That truck just isn't worth $30K. Mine is bells and whistles less being an LT2 but it was only $36K brand new. The truck is 3 years old and if the market changes next year your screwed.

Well I walked. It had a few dents in their paintless guy was going to fix. I didn't go too far out on a limb but offered them $29,400, and they said no. I will continue my search for now. I did drive the truck tonight and it felt good and there was more power than my 03 for sure. It also felt like a nicer drive for some reason.

Either thier not too smart, or they put too much into it taking it in, or they'll call you back...either way, like someone said, expand your search. Lots of deals out there, just gotta sniff 'em out. The more you hunt, the more you learn too. Good things come to those who wait.

Anyone have any tips for getting this one cheaper? The dealer just doesn't want to budge. NADA, Edmunds, and KBB between $33,500 - $36,500. I offered $35,000 cash and they said no!

Okay, let's be honest here. NADA, Edmunds, KBB, etc don't mean anything anymore, when it comes to dealerships. Times have changed; the economy has changed. If you don't know this already, dealers only use NADA or KBB Blue Book values when it benefits them. For example, if you go to trade in a vehicle, and you expect to get the NADA or KBB Blue Book Trade-In value, you will leave disappointed. In the past, most dealerships would use NADA and KBB; they don't anymore. They use the Black Book, or auction values, these days...for trade-ins, anyways. What I'm getting at, here, is that most dealerships will offer you Black Book value for your trade, but try and turn around and use KBB or NADA Blue Book values for the retail sale. The stealerships aren't dumb; they know most people use NADA or KBB, and they prey on that idea.

If you really want the truck that is seen in the autotrader ad, make the dealership show you what they paid for the truck; if they won't show you, then you know they paid Black Book (auction values) and are trying to screw the average buyer. Tell them you know they paid the wholesale auction value for the truck, and you will pay 500-1000 over what they paid. Tell them that if the truck sits around long enough, they will have to auction it back off, likely for less than what they paid for the truck, and if they actually want to make money, they had better think about your offer.

Finally, go ahead and do a full VIN check/Build Sheet/CarFax to see where the truck was originally purchased. If you run the CarFax, you can see if the truck was purchased at auction. If you know this before you even get to the dealership, you have an even better chance of making the purchase.

Of course, do your homework and sound completely and totally confident at the dealership. Be ready to be a hardass, if you have too. Most dealerships hate me, but I always get good deals...funny how that works. In this economy, the dealership should be happy to have someone look at the truck, much less buy it.

Hope that helps,
Jon

Well then let them keep the stupid thing. Seriously the LBZ's might be in demand but that is like next to nothing in depreciation. That looks like an LT3 so maybe it was purchased for $42K or so on average and after nearly 3 years it only depreciated less then 20%? When have you ever seen that happen in a down economy. It defies all logic!!!!!!

I am happy the OP walked away, he didn't get that great of a deal anyway. Better trucks are out there for that kind of money. My truck is low miles and its not worth 25 right now even with the stuff i put into it. Economy sucks now, best to keep what you have and get what you want at the price you want my 0.2 cents.
