I need some help with the ac onthe burb. I sawpped in another motor on the winter that had an ac compressor on it so i left it. Now that it is over 100 degrees here I thought I would get the ac going. this is what I did: replaced all o rings, evaporator, orfice tube, ester oil, and freon. It was blowing cool when it was 75-85 outside but seems like ambient temp now. I thought it had leaked out and it checked out at 40psi on the low side but still no cold air. By the way when I added the new freon it, only took about a can and half before it was near the overfill line. On the old motor it took almost three cans to fill it.
Any thoughts?

was the condencer cleaned when the engine was swapped? if not that might be the culprit my 8630 was blowing ambient air untill i cleaned the condencer now its fairly cool

i used a aircompressor and a blow end some parts were so clogged i had to get something that fit between the fins and tubes since it was a large round tube cooler i used a hacksaw blade to push the stuff out for that cooler id just try an aircompressor if that doesnt work maybe a powerwasher

I just cant figure why I could only get half of the normal freon in the system but still have 40psi on the low side.

did you evacuate the system first?

Arie you using R-12 or R134a? These refrigerant systems DO NOT HAVE an overfill line. The correct way is to weigh the refrigerant. As 4320diesel asked, did you evacuate the system? If you did not, you will have moisture inside the system which will freeze in your orifice tube and stop your evaporator from working.

If you have gauges, what are the pressures reading?

I did vac it out to 15" before adding refrigerant. The system is actually Freeze-12. The only guage I have is the one that comes on a can of frigerant, for the low side. And with that one I get 40psi.

So right now I have about 20oz and it is susposed to take about 36oz should I just keep filling it? I would take it to a shop to have it checked but out here in the sticks no one has a freeze12 fittings for thier guages.

the way the shop would do it is convert it to r-134a, as its what every shop uses now, its not that expensive to retro fit either.

I went out this morning and tried to add a little more freeze12 this morning and it took all of the can that I had and the air started coming out cold and the pressure on the low side is in the range that it should be. I don't know. Thanks for the help guys another job well done.:)
