: Double Din For 01-02's
Tbirdfiend281 07-25-2009, 05:04 PM is there anyway i can utilize a double din head unit in my truck? i havent actually measured up, but it looks like it will work just fine
anyone installed a double din in these before?
Chevy454 07-25-2009, 05:20 PM Look in the Do It Yourself forum here...someone has a write-up of putting a double-din in an '02 I believe it was...I just read it a couple nights ago.
Mitco39 07-25-2009, 05:38 PM It is possible... I had a double din in my truck, although the hardest part is to get the bezel to look factory. I messed up with the dremel and it didnt look as good as it could have. As for the room there is enough, you just have to modify the back of the dash. I was told some people used a bezel out of a newer truck but you should know that they have different mounting points so time will have to be taken to get it to fit correctly.

03 bezel swaps right in you just have to move the hvac controls a down get the 03 bezel and radio bucket and its direct swap
Mitco39 07-26-2009, 11:37 AM No the mounts are a little different as well... I had got a bezel and I know the guides (little plastic pieces to line up) are different.
Im not sure if the bezel was from a chev or a gmc because I got it from a junkyard.

ive had both 01 and 04 there the same guides cause the dash (the part with the holes) is the same part and chevy and gmc are the same

thanks guys, i figured you could go either way, but i prefer the most cost effective, witch is to just modify what ya got
Mitco39 07-29-2009, 08:05 PM well then I must have gotten a bezel out of maybe a newer truck? who knows... haha.
I personally love my flip up alot better, it has a removable faceplate and looks like nothing fancy when it is closed.

well you could find the bezel for 70 bucks or less all day long at junkyards and ebay

flip ups don't feel right to me, especially in my pickup, i just like double din so much better, flip ups make me think rice boy

that's 70 dollars id rather invest in the head unit, the modification required for it to work seem simple, so im not worried about it

ok then but i must warn you ive never seen one hacked that looks right unless you fiberglass it
Tbirdfiend281 08-03-2009, 05:50 PM really? how many have you seen?
that makes me second guess the idea, but at the same time its just plastic, its not hard to work with, and a little sand paper and precision painting and it should come out looking like its never been tampered with
and with swaping to the 03+ gauge surround doesnt that mean you must also swap to the newer style control since the din slot for them is bigger also

According to the write up, you keep the '01-'02 hvac controls, but have to move them lower in the opening itself.

Different strokes for different folks... I just like how I can hide it. and if they do try and steal it unless they know where I have the brain hidden I wont have to replace the whole thing. Another plus is I like how the screen is higher up. I noticed alot less glare looking at it when its higher up, and also a flip up allows you to change the angle at which it sits...
Tbirdfiend281 08-03-2009, 09:44 PM ya I wast trying to call you a rice boy or anything its just the oppinion i have of them, the double din just feels cleaner to me
the double dins can also tilt to, but i agree with you on the glare, in the trucks the placement of the head unit it horrible, its very glared. I need to 5% tint the rear window ASAP. I cant ever really see song titles during the day, im always holding my hand up to read them

10-15 most people that have end up swapping to the 03
other than moving the hvac controls down its a direct swap

only a select few can tilt
Mitco39 08-04-2009, 09:21 AM Yea your right about the tilting indash ones I didnt think about it to much last night. The one I had didnt tilt, and only had a 6 inch screen. Its amazing how much one more inch makes in the size of the screen. Its all good... haha.
