: Steering clunk under hard left turns...

I have the Cognito pitman/idler kit in my 06 DMAX and the dealer is blaming the "aftermarket parts" on my clunk. It is a parking lot manuvering noise that is only when turning hard left.

Anyone have any ideas as to what to look for? I also have a bit of sluggishness from the steering in low/no speed manuvers - where it feels like there is no power steering, but then it kinda kicks in.

Thanks!!

ISS probably needs replacing. Lots of info just below your post in suspension threads. Do not sit there and crank the wheel back and forth at a complete stop. Not good for the system(normal to feel resistance) start rolling before turning.

if it only does it on left turns its probibly not the ISS, my truck was doing the same thing, it ended up being a bad body mount.

Cognito parts???:lol they have nothing to do with your clunking. They keep your steering arms stable so that they can last longer, friggin stealer. Sorry man, I would say body mount, or if not steering shaft, check out cv's make sure no grease leaking out.

Yea - so I talked to my service writer today from the dealer...

He is insistent that the cognito parts are the problem.

I also talked to him about the GM bulletin on the body mounts and they were saying that my airbags in the rear were my problem...

uugh, so what do I say to the service MGR to get him to fix this thing right?

I have replaced the ISS already and it's not a clunk-clunk-clunk like the shaft would be, it's more of a turn hard left into a parking spot and CLUNK from the left side of the truck...

I'm going to visit the dealer in person tomorrow AM...

Dealer checked it out - the Cognito parts were siezed up - so they lubed it up and now it's all good. They are also going to be putting in the new body mounts for me on the truck. YAY!

(I guess it just takes talking to the right person and things get done!)

I just never lubed the cognito parts so the salt that they use on the roads here in MN had built up and the pitman arm thingie was not moving freely. took it off, lubed up and put back on and now it's all good and quiet.

The body mount bulletin is another post here on the suspension forum...

You mean the zerks in the upper control arms?

no - what siezed up was the cognito "ball joint" if you will... it's the exposed nature of this thing and the MN salty winters and my lack of lubrication that lead it to stop moving. They took it off and lubed it up and it's all good now.

The dealer just said keep it well lubed and all should be fine.

I can tell just from driving it that the problem is fixed.

Cheers! :)
