My 2002 Duramax Diesel has approx. 80,000 miles on it and the other day I got in the truck to start it, and I had no power brakes, and no power steering. I shut the truck off and started it again four times, still the same problem. I called a wrecker to take the truck to the dealer. Shortly after arriving and unloading the truck, everything started working again. This is the second time in two months this has happened. I have no fluid leaks, the fluid is at max capactity. The dealer did a leak down check on the system, no problem. I have a feeling a valve is sticking inside the pump, but I can't imagine is sticking open, maybe closed, but not open. Any insight would be helpful. It has been at the dealer for three days. Labor is going to be out of sight, two hours to just hook up the guages to test the system. Thanks, Duramaximum.

I wish I had a difinate answer for you, but a concern that comes directly to mind is why does the safety backup not give you at least one or two times of a solid feel to the brakes???? I would be looking at the brake booster myself, not the pump. If there is something there stuck open allowing the fluid to flow freely back to the pump resevoir, then that might explain the problem. Gut tells me you might have a bad booster.

Hooking up the p/s tester on a diesel really is a two hour job. Just authorize them to replace the pump, that is what you need to fix the problem, regardless of whether or not they can duplicate it.
