Stopped on the blacktop road out by my house over lunch and had a sudden urge to see if the truck would light 'em up on a hot, greasy road. First attempt was to simply mash the gas from a standing stop. No go. Next attempt I power braked slightly. Both tires spun but truck immeadiately wheel hopped. After a short distance the wheel hop stopped but then only the left rear was spinning. What gives? Does the rear end unlock at a certain speed? And how come the left rear stayed spinning and not the right rear? On my old open rear ends the right rear was the one that would light up. Just trying to figure out how this G80 works. Thanks!

If I am not mistaking, after the wheel speed reaches about 20 mph or so, the G80 will unlock. If I am wrong, please someone correct me.:)

I duno but I will leave 2 equal strips. Quite some distance if I just bring her on boost and let off the brake and mash it, only had em rolling over before I let off the brake and then mashed it once(a real power brake), left 2 strips untill I decided it was a good time to let off.

I have went around a corner and gave it too much throttle inb a long sweeper and I was probably doing over 20, one strip there. The gov lock isnt real predictable.

Wheel hop is bad and how you break stuff.

you might have trashed it. i know some have and get the one-legged strip.

Yes, wheel hop is bad which is why I won't do it again. I would hope that the one and only time I try to do a burn out on a greasy, blacktop road didn't trash the rear end. Heck, I barely power braked it. I bet I didn't get the RPM up past 1,500 before I let off the brake. I guess I didn't do a true power brake as the tires didn't start to spin until after I let off the brake. It didn't take much to break it loose. If that trashed the rear end then I'm less than impressed with the G80.

I know they aren't supposed to lock over 20mph but if they lock while accelerating (torque applied to the diff) will they unlock at 20mph or not until you let off the throttle?

They don't unlock until the wheel slippage stops. I really coated my friends truck with mud last year while out muddin' . I was stopped in a long mud pit,and he pulled up too close behind me.I put my truck back into 2HI and eased into the throttle, I could see him laughing because I couldn't quite reach him with the roostertails of mud. His laughing inspired me to reach him:grd: so I matted the throttle and had mud slinging about 50' behind me.

I remember seeing the needle on the tach reading about 4K,and the speedo reading about 60MPH. In the rearview mirror I could see two big roostertails of mud as they left about 1" of mud on my friends truck. :D

Yeah I was told at 25mph it kicks out but if it still had even traction I would think both would still spin. I love my G 80 but I liked the Detroit in my 79 1 ton chevy.

I can leave a 60 footer with my six gun, i toasted my stock doughnuts in 4k miles. My G80 hasnt ever given me trouble, Ive gotten my speedo to read 50 while sitting still with the rears smokin. I could even do staggered 1st... then 2nd... then 3rd burnouts while the tranny was shifting made some jaws drop with that.
One time some ricer chucked a rev at me, i started powerbraking in level 6 and my rear end was litteraly jumping up and down... smoked him!!

Sorry to drag up the dead and beaten, but I am totally dissapointed in my G80. Locking?? Riiight. Doesn't lock in snow, doesn't lock in rain, and as I just found out, doesn't lock when leaving a 300' line of liquid rubber..

And someone remind me why i paid the $250 for this option again??

mine locks all the time in snow/rain/everything. It's actually an issue for me up here because when it locks up going around a corner on ice, it can cause the rear end to break free...

i think if the difference in wheel speed between the left and right exceeds a certain amount it won't lock.. presuming its not fried. if you pull the cover take a peek at the locking gear.. mine had no teeth left on it when i fried it..

also it had chunks in the fluid.

I'll be changing the fluid this week, I'll pull the mag hytech off. Looking at the gears, where is the locking gear at, left side? Can't remember what it looked like last time I had the cover off.

VFR, the locker gear is the small gear on the "backside" of the ring gear (far left from the rear). Like Diesel Power said, you can probably tell if you have any "chunks" on the drain plug magnet or Mag-Hytec dipstick magnet before pulling the cover. Of course, the Mag-Hytec is a heck of a lot easier to R&R due to the o-ring. The longest and hardest part of installing my Mag-Hytec was scraping that PITA OEM paper gasket residue off the diff!

The G80, only locks when there is a "100 RPM" difference between the axle shafts (similar to the gov-lock which is why their fondly known as grenade lockers)... and will unlock/not lock at road speeds above 20mph..

I've had mine locked before laying twins on the road about 75+ feet launching from a boosted condition. I wasn't sure that it was but the two strips said so.
