: low coolant light and noisy thermostats?

I drained and refilled my Duramax LB7 this weekend with fresh Dexcool. The old coolant looked great and perfectly clean. So I think I'm doing OK internally.

Anyhow...after running the truck 25 miles and letting it cool down it was low in the surge tank/de-gas tank. I started the truck up and the level was low enough to trigger the low coolant message. So while it was running I filled it to the cold mark. The light never went out after 25 more miles of driving even thought the level was fine. I shut the truck off and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then I started it up and the light stays off now.

When you get a low coolant light...does it require a shut down to reset it? And do I need to get any codes cleared? I know on newer CAT engines if you get a low coolant warning...it triggers a code in the ECM that cannot be cleared without the CAT tech calling CAT and getting a special number password to clear...since this is considered a fatal code and they don't want people just erasing it over and over. Or does GM not do this?

Also...when fully warmed up and shut down...if I squeeze the upper hose and force coolant to move around...I can hear a rattle or ticking noise from the thermostat housing. Is this just the thermostats not being seated under spring pressure and one of the "disk" pieces on it fluttering around with the coolant moving back and forth? Hope I don't have to re-drain and replace those. The temps are spot on otherwise and they seem to be working fine.

Code can be cleared with any code reader. Goto parts store and see if there is a code and clear it off. As to the noise I can say. Never done that to mine.

A low coolant light does not throw a code it is just a warning on the DIC

Just thought it be a soft code. Once corrected not show CEL no more but still be there in history. Thanks for the info.

I know my Scangauge wont show it.

So if there is a code you would probably need a Tech2 to see it.

It is not uncommon for the low coolant light to come on after the air burps out so I wouldn't worry

If temps are spot on, don't worry about it, drive her like you stole her!

i changed out my thermostats about a month ago and i got the low coolant light this morning, if you add coolant the light will go off. It will show up in the mesage center and it won't pop the MIL light on.
