: Removing trans.
IdahoRob 05-10-2005, 11:10 PM I'm taking the trans out in the next couple days to install upgrades. The R&R looks pretty straight forward, but I'd thought I'd ask about any hidden things or tricks I should know about before taking it on.
Thanks,
Rob

Disconnect both batterys and drain fluid from Ally pan and transfercase. Converter bolts ( 6) are accessed through starter hole after starter is removed and pushed aside. Cooler lines pull out after clips are removed. Use a good sturdy trans jack and allways have another person present to help you. DO NOT do this alone for your own safety. If you need help, call me.

Max Payne 05-11-2005, 09:27 AM The factory T/C bolts are delicate. Use a good 15mm 6pt. socket. Some will need to be cracked loose with a breaker bar before you can rattle them out with a looong extension. Don't reuse the T/C bolts.
dpfcummins 05-11-2005, 12:41 PM Get a long extension(i think our's is between 3ft.-4ft.). This way you can remove all the bellhousing bolts by using an impact gun while standing behind the tail of the tranny. Matt

You make it sound too easy mike...;)
dmaxalliTech 05-11-2005, 01:27 PM dont try and remove the wires from the starter, just unbolt and lay it aside.

Don't do this :badidea:
IdahoRob 05-11-2005, 02:02 PM Thanks everyone, I'm trying to get myself pumped up for the job. I'll be doing this without a lift in my garage. I plan on putting the truck on jack stands and using floor jacks for the heavy work(don't laugh). I have no time concerns and will get help when needed. My health and life insurance policys are paid up. Wish me luck!
Rob
Max Payne 05-11-2005, 02:13 PM Remember that the trans is taller than the amount of ground clearance, so you will need to get the truck pretty high in the air to slide that fat girl out of there.
ratlover 05-11-2005, 02:51 PM What max said.
IMO dont use a regular floor jack for the trans R&R!
Rockin 05-11-2005, 03:51 PM You know you can rent tools like a trans jack. There are Tate's rents all over Boise. Where are you in Idaho?
minisub 05-11-2005, 04:58 PM I thought it was here that I saw pics of someone who lowered the trans into a cradle of ratchet straps with a floor jack and then used the ratchet straps to lower the trans to the floor. He then used a slip sheet to pull it out from under the truck. The straps provide a bit of security when using the floor jack and the slip sheet saved 4 to 6" of needed floor jack height.
ratlover 05-11-2005, 05:30 PM I had to drop my trans off the jack under the truck and pullit out using cardboard as a slide. Saved quite a bit of hight. Took a few friends to get it off the jack and back on the jack. Its not a bad idea and works but you better have some friends.
I have done some redneck engineered things in my day and supprising to most I am alive and still have use of all of my limbs. I would still recomend using the proper tools for the job. Would I use rachet straps, bungee cords, bailing wire, ductape, an excavator and a bobcat(actually did uses those last ones:eek: ) if need be? Yes, but do as I say not as I do):h

remove the transfer case first then lower the jack w/ tranny onto floor. roll it over onto a towel. Jack up one side of the truck and you can drag the tranny out. pretty heavy. will need some help. anyhow, this is how IBDMAX'IN did his in my garage (with some of my help).
IdahoRob 05-11-2005, 06:06 PM Thanks guys, keep them coming.
Rockin I'm in Eagle, there's a tates a couple of miles away. I'll give them a call and see what they have available. Want to come over for some laughs?
I like the strap idea, just in case.
I've done backyard trans/engine jobs before, just not with a new $40,000 rig. I'm not too worried about it, but my wife is having her doubts. Something silly about modifying and voiding the two years left on the warrantee.

Just bear in mind that this isn't your typical transmission...The damn thing is heavy..big time..
If you are using a floor jack, I would at the very least recommend a transmission adapter on the plate...I can only imagine the amount of concrete that thing would take out of the floor if it fell off the jack..(Or, how flat one of your limbs would be if it fell on one of them:eek:)
Good luck to you, and let us know how it went!
Max Power 05-11-2005, 06:27 PM 330lbs dry weight according to the allison manual.
moss022 05-11-2005, 07:27 PM the tranny is much bigger than i ever expected! for the first time droping a tranny, i didnt pick the right one to learn on! i jacked up the truck on all fours, used a tranny jack and then had to jack the front up with an 8" block on the floor jack just to get the tranny to clear the torsion bars. was lots of fun doing almost all of it by
myself-no fun
VFRRider 05-11-2005, 08:14 PM dont try and remove the wires from the starter, just unbolt and lay it aside.
I hear that brother... by the way, know where I can get a spare solenoid to replace one that is glued together??

That was my trans, done by Amric and myself.. ghetto, but it worked):h
Fingers 05-12-2005, 08:00 AM Hmm. I did the exact same thing with two ratchet straps. I even ratchet strapped the tranny to the floor jack. Works like a charm.
The tranny is heavy. I did the whole thing myself and was able to muscle it around and onto the work area, but I can see someone having problems.
