I own a 1996 GMC suburban 4X4, 2500, with the 6.5TD. The engine will not idle, runs rough, and lots of black smoke. No codes. Checked the FSD module, still the same. No air leak that I can see, and the turbo seems to be okay. I was told at 200K miles, it time for a new pump. Who can rebuild for the best price today, any suggestions?
Also, can I swap this engine with a Duramax, and how practical, or expensive would that be? I am sure I am not the first to ask this.
Thanks
Ed

A Duramax swap would be costly as you'd have to swap in the Allison trans as well. Then you'd have to swap over the entire wiring harness and computer. Your not the first to ask, and there are a few who have done it. User "TheFerminator" has done it and the owner of "The Diesel Page" forums has done it as well.
You'd have to find a donor vehicle(wrecked truck but functioning drivetrain) to get the Dmax/Alli out of.
Send a PM to user DieselPro here. He'll get you a good price on a reman pump.
Installation's not that bad IMO(i've only done one IP install and that was on my 6.2). Upper and lower intake will have to come off(you'll need new gaskets). There are 3 studs holding the IP onto the timing case that you'll have to unbolt. Then you'll have to remove the oil filler tube and turn the engine over by hand(do not use the starter) and remove the 3 bolts holding the IP to the IP gear that's driven from the timing gear that's on the camshaft.
You'll have to remove the injection lines as well(i removed them from the injectors and the IP). Make sure you number the injection lines as you remove them.
I know on the 6.2 mech injection there is a line on the pump and a line on the case that you have to line up to get the engine to run. With the electronic injection 6.5(94 up to 2000) you'll have to get a hold of a tech II or equivalent to set and check the timing.

I only own a 6.2 so if this advise is completely wrong for your electronicawockle-uncontrolled gadgetry, someone correct me...
However, I would say, before you go so far as a pump rebuild, have a diesel shop check your timing and injectors, as these can cause the problems you mention...
