Too start with I have a 94 4door long bed. it has a complete 3" strait pipe system... and a number 9 resistor. any other upgrades is unkown to me.. I have only owned 2 mounths... My ? is how hot should this combo get pulling a hill.. last night I started up a steep grade and befor I knew it the temp was braking 900..post turbo the trailer is 3500# I was down to 50-55mph just to get the temp down.. not a lack of power I could have pulled it at 75 if nor for the temp.. any ideas?????

I think everyone has been saying 1200 Max pre turbo IIRC, add 300 to yours to be safe. I'm pre turbo now and I can hit 1200F when i get on it and i'm not towing.......yet

that seems like a steep temp for that light of a trailer.

That was my thought also.. any ideas how to lower it or what might casue it to be that high?

WMI or Intercooler would do nice job bringing down temps. How much boost you running while pulling that hill

I am currently looking into puting an IC down where the skid plate is, and running the two tubes through the passenger-side wheel well and up to the engine. If I am successful, I'll post pictures.

I agree with the previous poster, that this is the best possible approach, if you can do it fairly cheaply, a DIY project.

I am curious to know what everyone thinks about sustanined exhaust temps of 900 when pulling a long steep grade. How long is it safe to hold these temps? What are the limits, that is how long can you hold them in the 900-1100 degree range?

Thanks

While the standard for post turbo egt's is to add 300 degrees, it is not always accurate. To prove my point, I too used to use a post turbo pyro, until I cracked 5 pistons on a 94 6.5! What I found was, sometimes the 300 degree spread is accurate and sometimes it can be off as much as 200 degrees. The higher your boost level the more it can be off. So what is the simple answer? Put your probe preturbo and limit your egt's to 1200 max for short duration and 1050 for continious pulls and you wont do this:banghead:

so for this weekend( I dont have a lot of time between now and then) just try and hold the temps below 900?
Ps.. pulling on a 1700 mile road trip...friday-sunday...
does any of your truck run this high

EGT's can reflect how efficient your burn is. Advanced timing with full boost would solve most of that.

When I set cruise for 65 and climb steep grades in VA mountains, truck downshifts into 3rd, boost spools to over 10, maybe up to 12psi, and POST turbo egt's climb right on up over 900F. Empty truck, NOT towing. Once I crest the hill, things cool down. Mind you coolant gauge stays at 180F (when its cold out it doesn't get that high). Just a data point, I don't abuse this truck and I seldom tow, but it seems this engine has to stress nevertheless for a small percentage of time. No escaping a hot engine.

I hate to ask a wicked stupid question guys but I thought post turbo temps were lower than pre-turbo temps?

Just got back from towing our antique firetruck from here to Kelowna and all I can say is that I am very happy with how the truck performed. The trailer and firetruck came in at 10,000lbs and anyone who has driven hwy 97 in BC from Prince George to Kelowna knows the kind of hills there are. I think the worst hill dropped me down to 50mph keeping it at 900 post turbo, most hills I was able to hold 60mph at around 800deg. On flat I was around 550-600 deg 65mph. Only bad thing was a couple overboost codes set on long pulls, but I should be able to fix that with a little tweek of the turbomaster. All in all, I am very impressed. Best tank of fuel I got 15mpg, worst was 12.5. This was the first long haul I made towing anything substantial with this truck.
