I checked with my local Chevrolet dealer about this problem. The service guy said that it would cost me $39.99 to diagnose the problem. If it was the wiring that is crimped, the mirror face would have to be removed to repair the wiring. The mirror face breaks 99% of the time (according to him). Therefore one would need a new mirror face (over $150) and pay for the labor, etc. coming to over $400 to make the mirror adjust with the electric switch. In other words, they have to destroy the mirror to fix it. I asked if there was a directive from the company to fix it for free and he said that there was none. He also said that this does not occur very often.

Mime will move in and out but not up and down. It would have to be on the passenger side, if it were on the driver side I could put the window down and ...

I've removed the glass upper glass on my tow mirrors several times. It's not that difficult to do. Push the top of the mirror in. You should be able to reach under the mirror and feel a tap. Push the tab in and start sliding the mirror up. As the mirror slides up you will have to start pushing the bottom of the mirror back in to get the mirror out of the housing.

Your problems with mirrors not working is most likely caused by broken wires. I just finished fixing a bunch of breaks on the passenger side of my '06 with the towing mirrors (manual extend).
To get the top glass out without much trouble, forget about getting a block of wood, and hammering up on the bottom of the mirror........the last time I tried that, I broke the mirror ($200+ :eek:Canadian retail from the local dealer; due to a couple of different things, I paid $167 and tax for mine). The new mirror glass came with a hard plastic installation and removal tool, which works fantastically better than pounding with a hammer on a wood block.
This tool is about 10 1/4" long, 2" wide, and 3/8" thick. The business end is a wedge starting at 1/8" thick, and over a length of 1 1/2", slopes up to the full thickness of the tool.I see no reason that this tool couldn't be made out of wood without too much difficulty, and would likely work just fine.
Note that the following is for the towing mirrors on an '06 crew cab; I have no experience with any other model year, but I imagine the procedure should be similar. To remove the upper glass:tip the top end of the upper mirror in as far as it will go (the mirrors can be moved around with finger pressure on the edges quite readily), then insert the thin end of the wedge between the two portions of the mirror, and gently pry up on the glass until the 4 mounting tabs disengage from the mirror mount.
To reinstall, tip the top edge of the mirror mount out, insert the 4 tabs on the mirror glass back in to the mounts on the mirror motor housing, then gently pry down with the wedge between the top of the glass, and the mirror shell.NOTE:If any one following this procedure breaks their mirrors, don't blame me.......the instructions above are basically what is molded into the back of the factory supplied tool that came with my new glass.
I did this in the parking lot of the dealer after picking up the new glass, and took less than 5 minutes to finish installing the two sets of wires and putting the glass back in.
