: S400 turbo questions
rulonjj 07-15-2009, 08:39 AM I'm looking at buying a Airwerks S464SX(64mm inducer/74mm exducer) 1.10 A/R with the ETT wheel (extended tip technology) T4 exhaust flange. Just wondering if I could tow with it. I have a 10,000 lb trailer I pull every where I go. I'm trying to get about 500-550 rwhp
hdd-max 07-15-2009, 08:59 AM If all you want is 550 RWHP no need for a turbo like that. It can be done with the stock turbo. If you are looking for lower EGT's S300, and Cheetah. If you want the lowest EGT's go with twins.
vortecfcar 07-15-2009, 09:38 AM The 1.1 exhaust is way too big for your application, the turbo will lag at low RPM. The S300 66 is probably a better choice like HDD suggested. It has an .80A/R.

rulonjj 07-15-2009, 06:50 PM Ok. I've heard a few stories of s300 turbos giving out before thier time. Is this true? Maybe just a story. I would have not even bothered with the 400 exept that I heard this.

I towed with my 400 turbo,I towed truck to pulls and it worked good for me,I did a lot of towing with it,all with low EGT

There are more than 200 (not an exxageration) different s400's. It would be helpful for Rulonjj if you specified the impeller diameter and A/R of the exhaust you used :).

I put almost 100k miles on my BD turbo and it never missed a beat. There were some failures early, and you can make any turbo fail if you overspeed it too often. If you truly want just 550 rwhp and do not want stock go with an s300. Just my opinion.

It had a 74mm inducer with a 110 housing,Yes it was a lot bigger,I ran 650 hp street tune on the dyno and put mid 50 lbs for boost, with the race tune it put out 60 lbs with a 11.6 with my 03 cc/sb I thick it was 119 mph ? a/r 1.1 and yes it had lag but not as bad as the a-5000 I put over a 110,000 mile on
rulonjj 07-16-2009, 02:24 PM Would this be a turbo that would work for me? Also how much hp could I push out of this. You never know what I might do after I get a bigger turbo. :) Im mostly looking around right now as I don't have enough money saved yet but soon.....
s366
Compressor: 66.1mm inducer, 91.4mm exducer, with Extended Tip Technology.
Turbine: 79.8mm inducer, 73.4mm exducer, with machined back-cut (clip) of turbine blade trailing edge, for improved turbine flow. Cast in Inconel 713, for high-temperature operation.
Housing A/R:
Compressor: .55, with 4.0" hose-type inlet, and 3.0" hose-type discharge
Turbine: .88, with 'open' volute, featuring a 'T04-style' turbine inlet flange (3.25" x 2.75") and quick-release v-band discharge flange.
diamondshocks 07-16-2009, 07:21 PM ya that would not be a bad turbo, turbine wheel is pretty big but with a .88 housing it will probably work well enough. its going to take more fuel though to run it well. really id look into tuners before a larger turbo as your pickup is all stock right now
rulonjj 07-16-2009, 08:25 PM I actually need to update my profile. I have a tuner, exhaust, intake. I working on getting the trans built, lift pump, efi live and the turbo. Just trying to finish paying off the truck first. It won't be long though. Then I will be dumping the $1500 a month into up grades instead of payments
volumejunkie 07-17-2009, 05:03 PM $1500 a month:eek:. Why not check out High Tech Turbo?

turk walker 07-18-2009, 09:40 AM Do it right the first time and go with MPI twins.
nathan can also just get you an HTT, if thats all you want.

best place i have found is from Pat and Kat McRat
SEA04DMAX 07-18-2009, 02:03 PM MPI sells Htt Turbos.
Ben46a 07-18-2009, 02:19 PM I have the HTT "McRat" Promax kit. Its a 66 mm inducer with a 71 mm exhauxt exducer and a 14cm exhaust housing (about.8) It is a good towing charger, spools fast, runs fairly cool dependant on tuning and can support 650 ish hp. I really like this kit and recommend it to ayone looking foor a mild upgrade. The charger you posted is Basically a box stock version of a silver bullet or HTT pro street 66 but with a T4 flange instead of a T3. It takes a bit more to spool with the bigger wheel but would also be a good working charger.
