: How Long Will Upgraded Tranny Last?

I was just wondering if I get the upgrade how long will it last with constant added power. Will it last forever, 10 years, 5 years??? Just wondering because I don't want to spend 4g's and have it go out 5 years or 10 years from now.

Thanks

That's kinda a loaded ?. Anything is bound to happen when you start adding power but i'm not an expert tranny god. dave

I would say upgraded will last longer than stock. I know, I'm useless. :)

Well, that makes two of us. Im just smart enough to be dangerous...:duh:

I don't think anyone has 100,000 miles on a built unit yet, so even though we're pretty sure they'll stand up to the power, we don't know about longevity. If you just build it for everyday use because you're a paranoid type...I'd tend to think it would last darn near forever. Thats my opinion, though.

But then, if you're racing or pulling, longevity is relative...

Lets say for instance under 600 hp -- how long you reckon?

Since I don't build trannys for a living, I wouldn't even hazard a guess....that would be irresponsible, and get me in really hot water....

If you seriously want a someone's opinion, I'd PM MikeL, smoop, diesel tech, or DMaxalliTech.

It depends on how you treat it--it'll will last until it's had enough. Buy a good one with a warranty and you'll be covered for at least the warranty period--Suncoast comes to my mind first.

With current technology i wouldnt expect a 600hp trans to last more than a season or a year. Since a 600hp truck is basically a race truck,id plan on freshening it up every season, like any other race vehicle would have done.At 600 HP ,plan on spending a lot of $$ on broken parts,if you use the power a lot. If things dont break, great, but you cant be upset or plan on things not breaking.Im running my 3rd yr at 600+hp with my Dodge.Ive been very lucky so far,had one thing get me,but not much else.

I agree with John DiM.

When pushing something that hard, a yearly refresh is just smart, at least a teardown and inspect. I have done that with many hardcore guys, sometimes no work needed, other times a clutch pack or two to be safe.

A modded allison should have nearly the same life expectancy as a stock unit. I've seen stock units with 400k plus on them before failing. I dunno anybody with over 100k on a modded unit

Don't spend the 4g's because at 600 hp (probably nitros) your Ally will never make its 5th birthday. You were kidding when you said 10 years or forever weren't you? ):h

Crap I better get my lift in sooon! It appears I'm right on your maintenance schedule, although, it'd be every 6 months if I drove mine every day

Alright How about this then...

Lets say you have Attitude set to 5 -- predator set at it's highest. How long would an upgraded tranny last.

I just want to use it as a daily driver. I am not a racer -- yet. Just wondering. No need to belittle the questions, because I just don't know the answer and I'm trying to figure it out.

Thanks

Edge on 5 and predator at highest wont stack very well and will hardly be 600 hp.. Dont know anything on the tranny however.

At 600 you are way over double the stock levels! I don't know anyone who has the power and doesn’t use it. 5 years for me is more than 100K miles. It would be unreasonable to expect even a built alli to handle more than double stock HP/TQ for 100K miles, unless it is never used, and like I said earlier, ain't gona happen!

I don't have a built tranny yet, but common sense tells me if I want longevity from the transmission, don't build the engine past about 450 RWHP and then you still will have to drive conservatively.

Less than $.02 - anyone agree?

Seth - Mike L's answer, although short, is correct (There is no answer to your question)
The reason for this is that your driving habits aren't going to be exactly the same as anyone else. The way your drive your truck and what you do with it are going to dictate how many miles you get out of your transmission. Some guys might destroy a trans. buildup in less than 5,000 miles. Some might live for 100,000. There's just no guideline to give you a definitive answer because the variables can't be nailed down.

Seth, you sound like a little kid!!! stop with the whinning and listen to what people are saying, just because you didn't hear what you wanted doesn't give you the right to start nailing people with being sarcastic.

Mike L. gave you a straight forward answer, sure it was short but it was to the point. If you want someone to hold your hand and tell you what you wanna hear, here it is:

Yes, your $5,000 transmission will last forever, don't worry about putting too much power to it because it is invincible!!!

If you didn't wanna hear the truth, don't ask the question ;) .

Cheers, Wade

Irony it's a big word. You may need this link www.websters.com

Sorry if I ruffled your feathers but you have to admit the way you presented your question was lame plus it made no sense at all. I like to help anybody that needs it but I really didn't know what to do with your question. You made it sound like a little kid asking his dad if he put a superman cape on, could he fly.

IMO, your answer was absolutley 100% correct, regardless of how the question sounded... There really is no way to tell how long it will last.

I am man enough to admit it was indeed a lame question -- now that I know the facts. Before that I had no clue. All I ever read about is getting an upgraded tranny to handle the power etc... And for a few G's well it better last. I wasn't referring to you Mike L. just that other guy. I agree with you on your answer -- All I was wanting was an explanation of why you answered like that. No big deal man.

Seth, with big power, nothings going to last forever, especially if your an abusive driver or neglect to keep up with the trucks higher maintenance needs when its highly modded. You mentioned a 600Hp truck, just to be clear i dont think theres anyone hear running a 600+hp truck daily that has got the trans done and never had an issue again. If there is its only because there not driving much or they havent had big power for more than a yr or so.Although I drive a Dodge,I've been at 600+ for almost 3 yrs now and 45000 miles,2 yrs with #2 only,so you tend to use it a lot more when your not running nitrous.I went thru the trans before Thunder in Muncie last may as PM,and to upgrade a few parts that werent out almost 2 yrs before when i last had it out.Im going to pull that trans again, next week, its working perfectly, just to check it,and try a different stall TC. I dont expect any trouble when i pull it,but this way all summer when im yanking sleds ,drag racing or pulling my 33ft TT,ill have piece of mind. Not to mention Ill feel better when the snow flys and im pushing snow with it come december.

For anyone that drive a lot, I'd think the Suncoast would be the one to get. It has unlimited mileage regarless how you get those miles, with the level 5 The Sun Coast Allison transmission carries a 2 year warranty that it will handle any power level your Duramax can achieve.

I could not find any warranty information on the ATS website, but I didn't spend much time looking. The warranty information on the Suncoast website was right in front of my eyes. Very easy too find.
