: LLY with a 6 speed upgrade in the future?

I heard a rumor that our trannies are equipped with a 6th gear but the computer isn't equiped to recognize it. I don't know if this is true but after 06' would our trucks be able to have a simple upgrade for a 6 speed? Or would it need a whole new setup..trannie and everything?

I wouldn't be surprised if they did a few extra internal changes to make this six speed a:frankenst:eek:

Overdrives count as a gear, but you will also feel the torque converter clutch engage which will feel like a gear, but it does not count.

If I have understood conversations here correctly, simply put, you have 3 actual gears in the transmission and 2 overdrive gears which use combinations of the 3 gears to create 2 additional gears and then there is a lockup converter which will feel like a gear when it engages.

Those who have worked on these will correct me if I am wrong.

I heard something about a steaper cut gear in the 06, and more powerful engine to make up for increased power loss in the 6spd

I'm sure that with the LLY, some power mods and a set of 265s or 285s, it would be competing with an 06 6spd for fuel mileage

Not all that simple but can be done.

Don't think so. I have never heard of one getting 22-23 mph with those type of mods.

Dang it Greg, spill it can it be done and who is going to have the kit, I love my 05 but 6th would sure be nice for those long trips with the fith wheel in tow. Power is not a problem but more power = lower fuel mileage, that extra gear would be great!

With 6 trucks with over 400K combined miles this has been what they have seen. I will take my son in laws word for it since he is and engineer on the Allison 1000 team. He has know reason to lie about it. After all I see 20mpg on the hiway with my LLY.So another 2-3 mpg is not out of line.

Greg, I only wish I would see that on my LLY Dually, everyday 12-13 and towing the worst was 5.9 the best was 8.9, I know it's a dang big trailer and the wind kills me anyting over 65 but my 01 would get 8 to 11.5, know that was broken in 48K, and the 05 just turned 5800 but still. Please lets us know ASAP about a possiable 6th speed kit.
Marty

If I wanted to learn how to spell DIVORCE I could trade off the 05 and get a 06, no, wait she'd get the money?? :badidea:
I'm just glad she is understanding to my need for "tools" :ro)

All that is needed is an added bypass tube on the valve body and the software to make it all work.

Now, the MY06 trucks do have a higher helix angle on the geartrain to keep the noise level down since the planetary speeds will be higher, aka gear whine.

There are three planetary gearsets in the trans. They aren't identified by an overdrive gear or low gear, etc.. They are named P1,P2,P3. They are mechanically grounded to produce different ratio's through the use of the 5 clutch packs in the tranny. C1&C2 which are part of the rotating clutches, and C3,C4,C5 which are stationary clutches whose friction plates are mechanically grounded to the main case.

Clear as mud?

So are you saying we can upgrade our 5 speed tranny's to get a sixth? I'm having a really hard time seeing through the mud.:bigglasse
