ok guys i just repaired my tranny and re instaled it. because i could not get fluid anywhere local even at chevy ($28 per quart order only) i did some checking with a local speed shop they called red line for me and were told that the GM part number that i gave them crossed to a d4 red line fluid. about $11 per quart so i tried it drove the truck about 400 miles this weekend. and let me tell you holly crap:D it shifts better than it did stock slick as glass :cool:and my cluch doesn't get stiff after a long run (probably heat related). the factory FIll for life is total bull my fluid was BLACK after 35000 miles i am going to keep using redline and change it at 30k

What did you have to repair in the tranny?

I need to change my fluid. I don't know if it was ever done and the truck has 88k on it. Don't think I'll have time to do it before I pull the boat to the coast this week.

the roll pin that holds the 4th 5th gear fork to the shidt raod had backed out (got lucky caught it b4 it fell out completly and went through the gears:)) the trans fill is really quick about a 20 min job my fluid was scarey bad at 105 (hard miles)

how much fluid did it take and what is the exact name of the fluid? thasnks now i need to figure out how to fix the hole in the transfer case...

the fluid is made by redline you can google redline and order from them direct (i bought local cause i needed it asap) it was like 9.50 per quart from them it is listed under the automatic fluid Kinda hard to nav their website .... the type fluid is D-4 good luck with the tranfer case yuck

How many quarts did it take?

the book says 13 pints (6.5 quarts) but mine was a little over full with 6 quarts.


wish i had a time slip to compare with one now...thinking the shift quality would nock 1 ful second of a quarter mile time:cool: minimum though ( just a guess ) this stuff is really slick !!!!:D

well i kinda cheated there is a drain on the bottom 3/8 ratchet and another on the side like a differential but i diled mine through the shifter untill it started to run out the side (fill port) but you can just fill it throught the fill port on the side it is easier with a hand pump available at wal mart good luck

Sounds good, can't wait to get it all changed. Pretty tough to shift into gears for me.

i do use amsoil in the engine and had planned on using it in the trans but could not get the correct fluid local and had to get it together (needed the truck that next day) so i tried the red line figuring that i would switch to amsoil later. however i got so inoressed with the red line fluid that i will probably keep using it, depending on how it holds up i am going to keep an eye on the fluid color and see how fast it starts to darken as the factory fluid was black. i would like to ad some sort of external cooler and pump to cool it. also i just filled up my first tank after the swap and i definatly saw a rise in fuel milage also i drove the truck pretty hard this tank, i was enjoying the shift quality, i got 20 miles to the gallon i usually get 19 or 20 driving it nice this weekend i am going out of town on a road trip i always use the cruise so that should be a more fair comparison as i usually got 21 or 22 on the road we will see how it does now ( my worst tank ever was 14 and best was 24) i check every tank. deadeye i dont mean to belittle amsoil; in any way they have an encredible product and reputation.
