: Pyrometer maintenance
Mackin 05-09-2005, 07:36 PM What do you think?
1) Should it be removed and cleaned inspected periodically?
2) When do you replace considering it's in the line of fire?
Mine seems to be reading higher at idle all of a sudden, doesn't seem to want to cool off below 400 degrees as previous.

Just my .02
1) Never removed unless the probe itself is suspected of going away.
2) when the electrical resistance varies more than 15% on a Multimeter from a known good unused probe.... into the bit bucket it goes.
I have had probes last between 3 months and 1 year. No rhyme or reason for it.

How do expect to get it out.........................i mean its got to be just a big melted blob now with the egts we've been throwing at it, and theres no way your getting it out of the hole now :D
I would say don't touch it if it ain't broke
Super Diesel 05-10-2005, 01:02 AM 3 year on mine Mac. I will be upgrading to a whole new set of gauges here in about a month though (there already to go in with a new gauge holder). New thermocouple and the whole works. Blue backlit digitals looks realy cool. I need more accurate info of my changes with the testing I've been doing. I forked it out for these. They better last!
Mackin 05-10-2005, 05:35 AM Probably is melted
Seems to work as usual but,it wont cool off at idle and have seen it flick if you know what I mean.Jump would be another way to describe movement on occasion .
Thanks
coyotekid 05-10-2005, 11:02 PM Maybe this is out of the question, but how are your injectors? A bad injector(s) could cause too much fueling at idle and thus raise exhaust temps. Just food for thought...
bigblackdmax 05-11-2005, 12:13 AM I didn't have mine pushed in far enough and the egts would raise more slowly and also wouldn't cool down as fast as it did when I discovered the problem and put it all the way in. You might want to check that. Over time it just slowly moved out.
BlueDMax 05-12-2005, 11:25 AM My use to 'jump' and stick at variouos temps, including in 'cooled-off' position... turned out to be the gauge.
Slick 05-12-2005, 11:50 AM I think Mac got new injectors a few months back.
Mackin 05-12-2005, 07:27 PM Yes I did have all 8 replaced.
Something is either wrong with the Gauge, sender or Pyrometer. It's way screwed and far from accurate. It's jumping all over the place.
I will look into it further and let you know.
Cummin_Stroke_this_Dmax 05-13-2005, 12:05 AM So what happens to the probe? Do we need to worried about it breaking off and going through the turbo?
05 D/A 2500 05-13-2005, 02:02 AM What are normal idle EGT's ? I am seeing around 365+- with a few minutes of idle cool down. My old 12V Cummins would idle down to about 200?
Mackin 05-13-2005, 06:15 AM Something is a skew
It's either the gauge, sender or probe. The needle is erratic, jumping twitching like a coke head. Seen it come around like a speeding clock too, there is NO stop pin.
Going to pick up a new gauge

In the summer I could get it to idle down to 300,winter 250.
Cummin_Stroke_this_Dmax 05-13-2005, 05:32 PM Again.... what happens if the probe should break off? Or melt off?
Got Juice? 05-13-2005, 05:37 PM Again.... what happens if the probe should break off? Or melt off?
What Happens?
You start by going to EBAY and looking for a spare turbo!
I haven't heard of a probe tip melting/breaking off and becoming 'turbo food'
Not saying it isn't possible, just very very unlikely.
gtguy67 05-13-2005, 10:13 PM So what is the troubleshooting process? Do you ohm it out? I've been wondering the same about longevity, but hadn't really thought of what to look for to determine it is bad. My pyro reads ~130F when the engine is cold.

Well - that's good to hear. Thanks Juice

Either Ohm it out or check the millivolt Electrical output.
Check it against a known good (new ) probe of the same type.
I have 3 probes that are within 3%... if in doubt, I remove the probe from the truck and allow it to come to room temp after cleaning it, and then test it against the new unused ones.
